Every generation: what ownership is like, what breaks at what mileage, what repairs cost, and what to check before you buy.
The Silverado is one of the best-selling used trucks in the country, and 'which years' is the question every search turns up. The answers conflict: some lists name 2003-2007, others name 2011, 2014 or 2015-2017. That conflict is the clue: the problems follow the engine and the transmission, not just the year.
Four repairs come up again and again. The factory brake lines on 1999-2007 trucks rust. The 5.3L V8's cylinder-deactivation lifters can fail and run into the thousands. The 2007-2018 six-speed and 2015-2019 eight-speed automatics both have known patterns. On newer trucks, recalls matter more than wear. Each is priced below with sources.
This page walks each generation: what breaks at what mileage, what the repair costs, what to check when you're standing in front of one. We also show our own numbers (NHTSA complaints per catalog listing and how often ads mention a problem), always with the denominators.
problems cluster by generation, not by badge — know which one you're looking at
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing fall steeply across this generation, from 44.9 for 1999 (2,247 complaints across 50 listings) to 1.6 for 2006 (547 across 334). The generation median is 7.2. 1999 is 6.3 times that median and also passes our ad test, so it is flagged. 2000 is 16.1 per listing (2.2 times the median), but 18 of 74 enriched ads (24.3%) mention a problem against a 30.0% median, so our rule does not flag it. Older model years have had longer to collect complaints, which is part of why the early years look so high. The sourced patterns below are rusted brake lines and the 4L60E automatic.
| Miles | Item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Not verified (age and road salt, not mileage) | Rusted brake lines (1999-2007 trucks) | $600-$2,500 (au7o). One forum owner was quoted $1,100 in Massachusetts; another cites $600 for labor alone on an '05 2500, lines not included. | chevytrucks.org calls the factory brake lines 'very prone to rusting out', worse in salt states. Look at the hard lines along the frame rails and over the rear axle; a leak or a soft pedal on a truck this old needs the lines replaced before anything else. |
| Not verified | 4L60E automatic transmission wear | Rebuild $2,200-$3,400 (Creech Import, citing RepairPal for the Raleigh area). | au7o lists the 4L60E among the more serious known issues for the 2006 model. Ask for service records, check the fluid colour and smell, and watch for flare or slip between gears on a test drive. |
| any | Tailgate support cable corrosion (recalls 04V129000, 06V066000) | Free at a Chevrolet dealer when the recall is open (au7o puts an out-of-pocket fix at $40-$180) | NHTSA says the galvanized steel cables can corrode and fracture when loaded. Check the tailgate by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and look at the cables. |
| any | Steering shaft bolt (05V018000) and 5.3L fuel rail crossover tube screws (04V376000) | Free at a Chevrolet dealer when open | 05V018000: the bolt joining the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear may not meet specification and could fracture, with loss of steering. 04V376000: on 5.3L (RPO L59) engines the fuel rail crossover tube retainer screws may break. Confirm both by VIN. |
A year is flagged by our rule only when all three hold: (1) its NHTSA complaints per catalog listing is at least 2.0x the median for its generation, (2) the share of ads that mention a problem is above the generation median, and (3) we track at least 30 listings for that year. The cutoff was fixed before we looked. Ad mentions are not failures, and a flag is a reason to inspect harder, not a verdict on any one car.
Complaints add up over a car's whole life, so older years in a generation can look worse here than they are. Read this flag next to the complaint details below.
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing in this generation run from 0.71 for 2012 (284 complaints across 398 listings) to 2.99 for 2008 (1,076 across 360). The generation median is 2.17. No year reaches twice the median: the highest, 2008, is 1.4 times it. The top complaint areas are air bags, electrical and brakes in the early years, and air bags and structure later; air bags line up with the inflator recalls below. Several 'years to avoid' lists point at 2007-2008 or at the AFM years generally; we flag by rule, and none trips it.
| Miles | Item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| often cited before 100K; some owners report 180K-220K with no issue (Marin Mazda) | 5.3L/6.2L AFM (cylinder deactivation) lifter failure | $2,600-$4,800 (avturo, independent shop, priced for 2019-2021 trucks); $3,000-$4,500 for lifters on both banks (Capital Motorcars); $3,200 for a lifter repair against $7,000+ for an engine overhaul if a ticking lifter is ignored (Autos of Chicago). | Typical sign is a ticking or misfire (a lifter that has collapsed). Marin Mazda reports 2011-2013 trucks do better than earlier AFM years but are not immune. Ask whether the lifters or the engine were ever replaced, listen at a cold start, and check for a misfire code. Our ad-mention counts are not failure counts. |
| often noted by about 120K (Eskimo Auto Repair) | Oil consumption on 2007-2013 5.3L (piston rings with AFM) | Not verified: no repair price found for a ring job; owners report adding about a quart per 1,000 miles (Rohnert Park Transmission) | Apex Tech Nation says the 2007-2013 ring design controls oil poorly on the AFM cylinders; Rohnert Park Transmission says class actions have been filed. Check the dipstick, ask how often the owner adds oil, and look at the tailpipe for blue-grey soot. |
| 100K-150K for the wave plate (Transmission Repair Cost only) | 6L80 six-speed automatic: wave plate and torque converter wear | Wave plate job $1,400-$2,200 independent / $2,000-$3,000 dealer; full rebuild $2,500-$4,000 (Transmission Repair Cost) or $3,800-$4,900 (Creech Import, citing RepairPal, Raleigh). | Coretransmissionparts calls the wave plate the most common 6L80 failure and describes a harsh 1-2 shift, then loss of 4th gear; Transmission Repair Cost names the 3-5-reverse plate. The two shops disagree on which plate, so we say only 'wave plate'. au7o adds a separate control-module (TEHCM) fault that sends the truck into limp mode. Ask for fluid-service records. |
| any | Passenger air bag inflator recalls (21V050000, 21V051000, 21V052000, 21V053000) | Free at a Chevrolet dealer when open | These cover passenger-side inflator modules on 2007-2013 Silverado 1500 and related trucks; which VINs are included varies by campaign. Check the exact VIN. |
| any | 2011 rear axle cross pin recalls (10V643000, 11V007000) | Free at a Chevrolet dealer when open | The cross pins were not properly heat treated and could fracture and displace, locking the rear axle. Covers certain 2011 trucks only. |
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 0.60 for 2018 (522 complaints across 877 listings) to 2.76 for 2014 (1,561 across 566). The generation median is 1.13. 2014 is 2.4 times that median, so it passes the first test, but 41 of 405 enriched ads (10.12%) mention a problem against a 10.12% median, which is not above it. It passes only if the 'rust' flaw is left out of the count (16 of 405 = 4.0% against a 2.2% median), and our rule needs the test to hold with rust counted too, so 2014 is not flagged. The 2014 complaints include steering assist loss, which matches recall 17V414000 below. Several 'years to avoid' lists point at 2014-2017; none of those years is flagged by our rule.

|---|---|---|---|
| Not verified | 8L90 eight-speed automatic: shudder and torque converter (2015-2018 trucks with the 8-speed) | Fluid flush with the updated Mobil 1 LV ATF HP plus a reflash $400-$700 dealer / $300-$500 independent; torque converter $1,200-$2,200 independent / $1,800-$2,800 dealer (Transmission Repair Cost); a 2018 estimate of $960-$2,170 for the converter (Fixxr); rebuild $2,800-$4,200 (Transmission Repair Cost). | Transmission Repair Cost describes a shudder under light throttle at low speed, handled by GM bulletins and a class action settlement; ask for the VIN's bulletin and fluid-service history. Pensacola Truck Transmission puts an inspection at about $125 and a fluid flush around $350. If the shudder returns after the fluid update, the converter is the next step. |
| often cited before 100K (Marin Mazda; some owners report 180K-220K with no issue) | 5.3L/6.2L AFM/DFM lifter failure | $2,600-$4,800 (avturo, independent shop, priced for 2019-2021 trucks); $3,000-$4,500 both banks (Capital Motorcars); $3,200 lifter repair against $7,000+ for an engine overhaul if ignored (Autos of Chicago). | The same cold-start tick and misfire pattern as Gen 2. Ask whether the lifters were ever replaced and scan for misfire codes. |
| 100K-150K (Transmission Repair Cost only) | 6L80 six-speed automatic (2014-2018 trucks with the 6-speed): wave plate | Wave plate job $1,400-$2,200 independent / $2,000-$3,000 dealer; rebuild $2,500-$4,000 (Transmission Repair Cost) or $3,800-$4,900 (Creech Import, citing RepairPal, Raleigh). | Same unit and same pattern as Gen 2. Ask for fluid-service records and watch for a harsh shift or lost gear. |
| any | Electric power steering assist loss (recalls 17V414000, 18V586000) | Free at a Chevrolet dealer when open | 17V414000 covers certain 2014 Silverado 1500s that may have a temporary loss of power steering assist, especially in low-speed turns; 18V586000 covers certain 2015 trucks where assist may be lost momentarily and then return suddenly. |
| any | Brake vacuum pump (19V645000) and ABS software (19V761000) | Free at a Chevrolet dealer when open | 19V645000: on 2014-2018 trucks the vacuum pump's output may fall over time, which can reduce brake assist. 19V761000: on 2014-2018 1500s with the 5.3L, a 3.08 rear axle and four-wheel drive, a failed wheel-speed sensor can cause the ABS software to activate the brakes at 41-60 mph. |
| any | Front upper control arm welds (16V256000, 2016-2017 trucks) | Free at a Chevrolet dealer when open | NHTSA says the front upper control arms may have inadequate welds near the bushing. Confirm by VIN. |
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 0.45 for 2025 (108 complaints across 239 listings) to 1.35 for 2021 (854 across 631). The generation median is 0.94. No year reaches twice the median. Our data has no enriched-ad count for 2025, and the newest model years have had little time to collect complaints, so their low figures say little yet. The top complaint area is the engine in every year, which lines up with the recalls and lifter reports below.
| Miles | Item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| some reports within the first 20K miles on 2020+ trucks (Rohnert Park Transmission); others later | AFM/DFM lifter failure on the 5.3L/6.2L (2019 and later) | $2,600-$4,800 on a 2020 truck (avturo, independent shop); $3,000-$4,500 both banks (Capital Motorcars). Rohnert Park Transmission gives no price. | Cylinder deactivation is now called DFM (dynamic fuel management) on newer trucks. Listen for a tick at a cold start and scan for misfire codes. Anything under warranty is a dealer matter; ask what coverage is left. |
| Not verified | 10L80 ten-speed automatic: harsh shifts and bulletins | Rebuild $3,000-$4,500 (Transmission Repair Cost); torque converter on a 2022-2025 truck is covered by a Go-Parts guide we could not open. | Transmission Repair Cost says the unit is too new for a definitive reliability profile and that bulletins suggest harsh-shift complaints similar to Ford's 10R80. Mostly a warranty question on newer trucks. |
| any | 6.2L V8 connecting rod and crankshaft recall (25V274000, 2021-2024) | Free at a Chevrolet dealer when open | GM says connecting rod or crankshaft components on certain 6.2L gas V8 trucks may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage and failure. Check the VIN; this applies only to the 6.2L. |
| any | Diesel transmission control valve recalls (24V797000, 26V083000, 2020-2022 diesel trucks) | Free at a Chevrolet dealer when open | The transmission control valve may fail and cause the rear wheels to lock up; 26V083000 (February 2026) covers trucks that may have been repaired incorrectly under 24V797000. Applies to diesel trucks. |
| any | Other recalls: driveshaft (20V650000), fuel pump (19V837000), transfer case (26V289000) | Free at a Chevrolet dealer when open | 20V650000 (2019-2020): a driveshaft joint may not have been properly welded and the shaft can separate. 19V837000 (2020): the fuel pump may be missing a pressure regulator. 26V289000 (2026, 4WD/AWD): a missing transfer case component may lock the wheels. |

We don't tell you to skip a year; we flag by a fixed rule (see 'Years flagged' in each generation), and exactly one Silverado year trips it: 1999. That year has 44.94 NHTSA complaints per catalog listing (2,247 complaints across 50 listings) against a Gen 1 median of 7.16, and ads mention a problem in 10 of 33 enriched ads (30.3%) against an 11.2% median, with the 'rust' flaw excluded. It is a small sample on the oldest year. 2014 comes close on the first test (2.76 per listing against a Gen 3 median of 1.13) but 41 of 405 ads (10.12%) is exactly the median, not above it, so it is not flagged. Ad mentions are not confirmed failures.
It depends on the engine and generation. Gen 1 (1999-2006): rusted brake lines and 4L60E wear. Gen 2 (2007-2013): AFM lifter failure and oil consumption on the 5.3L, and the 6L80 automatic. Gen 3 (2014-2018): the 8-speed shudder, lifters, and recalls for power steering assist and brake vacuum. Gen 4 (2019 on): lifter reports, 10-speed shift complaints, and recalls. Each is priced, with sources, in the generation sections.
Avturo puts a 5.3L/6.2L lifter job at $2,600-$4,800 at an independent shop. Capital Motorcars gives $3,000-$4,500 for lifters on both banks, and Autos of Chicago gives $3,200 for a lifter repair against $7,000+ for an engine overhaul if a ticking lifter is ignored. These are shop figures, not a quote for your truck.
Owners and shops report a shudder under light throttle on 8L90 trucks (2015-2019). Transmission Repair Cost says GM handled it with bulletins and a class action settlement; the usual fix is the updated fluid and a reflash ($400-$700 dealer, $300-$500 independent), then a torque converter ($1,200-$2,200 independent, $1,800-$2,800 dealer) if it persists. We don't have a failure rate, only these reports. Ask for the VIN's service history.
We don't have a mileage figure we could verify from two sources, so we won't give one. What we can show: lifter failure is reported before 100K miles on some trucks and not on others (Marin Mazda reports owners at 180K-220K with no major issues), and the 6L80 wave plate is reported at 100K-150K miles (one source). Service records tell you more than the odometer.
Our complaint-per-listing figures are measured against each generation's own median, so compare within a generation, not across. Within Gen 3 the range is 0.60 (2018) to 2.76 (2014); within Gen 4, 0.45 (2025) to 1.35 (2021), though newer years have had little time to collect complaints. No year in Gen 2, 3 or 4 trips our rule.
