Ford F-150 — the used buyer's guide

Every generation: what ownership is like, what breaks at what mileage, what repairs cost, and what to check before you buy.

The F-150 is the truck most used-truck shoppers start with, and 'which years' is the question every search turns up. The answers conflict: some lists name 2004-2006, others name 2010, 2013 or 2015-2018. That conflict is the clue: the problems depend on the engine and the generation, not just the year.

Three repairs come up again and again. The 5.4L three-valve V8's spark plugs can break off in the head (Gen 11). The 3.5L EcoBoost V6's timing chain and cam phasers can run into the thousands. The 10-speed automatic that arrived in 2017 has had shift complaints and bulletins. Each is priced below with sources.

This page walks each generation: what breaks at what mileage, what the repair costs, what to check when you're standing in front of one. We also show our own numbers (NHTSA complaints per catalog listing and how often ads mention a problem), always with the denominators.

The generations

problems cluster by generation, not by badge — know which one you're looking at

1997–2003

Gen 10

Gen 10 and Gen 11 together run 1997-2008 (Sturgis Ford). Gen 11 arrives in 2004 on a new platform with a fully boxed frame (CarBuzz); Gen 10 trucks are the ones before that.

NHTSA complaints per catalog listing fall steeply across this generation, from 34.8 for 1997 (2,991 complaints across 86 listings) to 2.3 for 2003 (464 across 198). The generation median is 11.8. 1997 sits at 2.9 times that median, but only 7 of 56 enriched ads (12.5%) mention a problem against a 23.6% generation median, so our rule does not flag it. The one engine pattern with sources behind it is the two-valve plug thread problem, below.

MilesItemCostNotes
Not verified Spark plug blowout on the 2V 4.6L/5.4L V8 (plug ejects from the aluminum head) A forum poster reports $450 to fix one bad plug thread; a do-it-yourself thread-insert kit is about $250 (video). No shop price list for a blown-out plug found. The repair people describe is a steel thread insert (Time-Sert or Cal-Van style kits) installed on the truck, without pulling the head or intake manifold (Bryan's Garage). Before buying, ask whether any plug has ever been replaced and by whom, and look for a plug that sits crooked or shows oil or soot around the well.
any Fuel tank mounting recall (11V385000, 1997-2003 F-150 plus 2004 Heritage) Free at a Ford dealer when the recall is open The recall concerns how the fuel tank is mounted. Check by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls that it was done, especially on a truck that spent winters in a salt-belt state.
any Speed-control deactivation switch recalls (05V017000, 07V078000) Free at a Ford dealer when open NHTSA says the switch may overheat; 05V017000 also describes smoke or burning. Confirm both by VIN.

Gen 10 trucks in our catalog clear around $3,200-5,500 depending on year (685 cleared sales, 1998-2003 model years). We have no 1997 clearing figure, and the year-to-year spread is not a straight line, so read each year on its own row.

2004–2008

Gen 11

Launched in 2003 as a 2004 model with a new platform and fully boxed frame (CarBuzz). The 5.4L 3V engine uses a two-piece spark plug on 2004-2008 trucks (Dwells Automotive).

Several 'years to avoid' lists in our search study point at 2004-2006. We don't tell you to skip a year; we flag by a fixed rule, and 2004 meets it (details under 'Years flagged'). Owners' reports concentrate on the 5.4L 3V's spark plugs, which can break off in the head during removal, and on 2004 visibility, power-train and engine complaints. Ford's own interval for those plugs is 100K miles, and the same source suggests pulling them near 80K, because the odds of a snapped plug rise past 100K.

What happens at what mileage

MilesItemCostNotes
Ford interval 100K; the source suggests pulling at about 80K (odds of breakage rise past 100K) 5.4L 3V spark plugs: two-piece plugs that snap or seize on removal $300-$500 best case; $800-$1,000 with 1-2 broken plugs; $1,200-$1,500+ with 4 or more (Dwells). RepairPal's standard-job estimate is $299-$391; one 2010 JustAnswer thread says $150-$1,000 depending on breakage, and a CarTalk service manager says up to $1,000. RepairPal members have filed 50 reports under 'spark plugs may be difficult to remove' for the F-150. CoPilot also places the plug problem at about 100K miles. The cost depends on how many plugs break, so ask whether the plugs were ever changed and whether a specialist did it.
Not verified 5.4L 3V timing chain, tensioners and cam phasers A forum quote of $2,500 on a 2004 truck; timing kit parts alone run $400-$800 (Timing Chain Replacement Cost). Listen for a cold-start rattle or a ticking from the front of the engine. Treat the $2,500 as one owner's quote, not a price list.
age-driven 2004 truck: windshield, wiper and defroster complaints Not verified - no source priced a repair CarComplaints lists windows/windshield, engine and transmission as the worst-reported areas for 2004; NHTSA's top three categories for that year are visibility (wiper/washer and defroster items), power train and engine. Check wipers, washers, defroster and window operation on the test drive.
any Recalls: airbag clockspring wire (11V107000, 2004-2006) and brake vacuum hose (08V208000, 2005-2006 5.4L 3V) Free at a Ford dealer when open 11V107000: the clockspring jumper wire can chafe against the driver-side airbag lower horn plate, creating a short-circuit risk. 08V208000: the brake booster vacuum hose on 5.4L 3V trucks may swell and lose retention force at the intake manifold fitting (605,684 vehicles). Confirm both by VIN.

Years flagged

A year is flagged by our rule only when all three hold: (1) its NHTSA complaints per catalog listing is at least 2.0x the median for its generation, (2) the share of ads that mention a problem is above the generation median, and (3) we track at least 30 listings for that year. The cutoff was fixed before we looked. Ad mentions are not failures, and a flag is a reason to inspect harder, not a verdict on any one car.

  • 2004 — flagged by our rule: NHTSA complaints are more than twice the generation norm, and ads mention a problem more often than the generation median, including with the 'rust' flaw left out of the ad count. Inspect the visibility systems, engine and drivetrain, and confirm the recall work was done. complaints 7.57 complaints per listing (2,036 NHTSA complaints / 269 listings) vs generation norm 1.65 (Gen 11 median) · ad mentions 28 of 184 enriched ads = 15.2% (Gen 11 median 9.6%) with the 'rust' flaw excluded; counting rust, 72 of 184 = 39.1% (median 24.7%) · n=269
Gen 11 trucks in our catalog clear around $4,997-5,999 depending on year (1,261 cleared sales, 2004-2008 model years). The lowest yearly median is 2004 and the highest is 2008.

2009–2014

Gen 12

Introduced for the 2009 model year (Wikipedia, f150compare). The twelfth generation brought EcoBoost (Fordmotorcity).

Two engine stories. On a 5.4L 3V truck the spark plug question from Gen 11 applies. On a 3.5L EcoBoost, the timing chain is the one to ask about: P0016 codes and a cold-start rattle show up in the 2011-2014 trucks. Owners also report a shift quirk (a buck or jerk at steady cruise in 6th) that Ford addressed with a software bulletin. Our rule flags no year in this generation: 2011 comes close on the first test and fails the second (see 'Years flagged').

What happens at what mileage

MilesItemCostNotes
often 70K-100K miles (Go-Parts); wear window 100K-150K (au7o) 3.5L EcoBoost timing chain stretch (P0016 code, cold-start rattle) $2,000-$4,000+ for the chain job (Go-Parts); $2,000-$3,500+ (Go-Parts, 2011-2017 sensor page); a 2025 forum post cites $3,800 for the final cam phaser update including a full timing set. Applies to 2011-2014 trucks with the 3.5L EcoBoost, built on or before 10/10/2014 per Ford's bulletins (Driver Adviser; TruckGuider cites TSB 17-0026, primary chain kit, 8.9 labor hours). One owner complaint on file (NHTSA ODI #11203984): a 2014 F-150 set P0016 at 92,000 miles. A cheaper cause exists on some trucks: Go-Parts prices a bad cam sensor at $30-70 against the chain job, so get the code diagnosed before approving the big repair.
Ford interval 100K; the source suggests pulling at about 80K 5.4L 3V spark plugs (trucks in this generation that still have the 5.4L) $300-$500 best case; $800-$1,000 with 1-2 broken plugs; $1,200-$1,500+ with 4 or more (Dwells). One 2010 JustAnswer thread says $150-$1,000 depending on breakage. Dwells' description of the two-piece plug refers to 2004-2008 trucks; we have not verified that 2009-2010 trucks use the same plug. Ask for the plug history either way.
any 3.5L EcoBoost buck or jerk at steady cruise in 6th gear (2011-2013) Software update; labor price not verified TSB 13-8-10 covers the 2011-2013 3.5L (Tomorrow's Technician). Ask whether the update was applied; feel for surging at 45-60 mph in top gear.
Not verified Carbon buildup on the intake valves (first-generation 3.5L direct injection, 2010-2014) Not verified - no source priced the cleaning Lemon Law Experts says the carbon problem mainly affects the first-generation (2010-2014) 3.5L direct-injection engines.
any Recalls: 6-speed downshift to first (19V075000, 2011-2013) and master cylinder seal (16V345000, 2013-2014 3.5L) Free at a Ford dealer when open 19V075000: the transmission may unexpectedly downshift into first gear regardless of speed. 16V345000: the master cylinder rear cup seal may roll, causing brake fluid leakage from the primary reservoir into the brake booster (trucks built Aug 2013 to Aug 2014). Also 11V049000 (2009-2010 interior door handle spring). Confirm by VIN.

2015–2020

Gen 13

Aluminum body from the 2015 model year (Sturgis Ford, Bellefourche Ford). 2015-2020 per f150compare and Wikipedia. The 10R80 10-speed automatic starts in 2017.

NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 0.68 (2020) to 2.54 (2015), against a generation median of 1.64, so no year gets near the 2.0x line. The pattern owners talk about is the 10-speed's harsh shifts from 2017, plus brake master cylinder recalls on the 3.5L trucks. Ad mentions run low across the middle years (3.5% to 4.7% of enriched ads for 2016-2019), and 2020 sits higher at 8.6% (51 of 593 ads). Ad mentions are not confirmed failures.

60K-100K miles on 2017-2020 trucks (Autos of Chicago) 3.5L EcoBoost cam phasers (rattle on cold start) Phasers only $2,400-$2,750 at a specialist, $3,800-$4,500 at a dealer; full timing overhaul $2,850-$3,200 specialist, $4,600-$5,200+ dealer (Autos of Chicago). Empire Auto Protect puts a phaser replacement at $1,900-$3,200 (2026). Owner posts: $4,310 pretax customer-pay (2024); a $5,300 dealer quote on a 2017 at 116K miles (2023). 11-14 book hours for the job. Ford issued TSB 21-2119 and 22-2200 and customer satisfaction programs 21N03 and 21N08; these are not safety recalls. Check whether a program applied to the truck you're looking at and whether the work was done.
Not verified 10R80 10-speed automatic: harsh or erratic shifts (2017 and later) Reflash 0.8-1.6 labor hours; remanufactured transmission $3,530-$5,158 before labor (ShopEarl). TSB 25-2126 (March 2025) addresses a clutch cylinder (Rohnert Park Transmission). Transmission Repair Cost mentions a solenoid pack and a class action. The $3,530-$5,158 figure is the price of a remanufactured unit, the top of the range.Ask whether bulletins or reflashes were done, and feel for harsh 1-2 and 2-3 shifts on a cold drive.
any Brake master cylinder leaks into the booster (several recall campaigns) Free at a Ford dealer when the recall is open Recall campaigns 20V332000 (2014-2017 3.5L), 22V150000 (2016-2018 3.5L) and 25V236000 (2017-2018 F-150) all describe brake fluid leaking from the front wheel circuit into the brake booster. Check by VIN that all of them are closed.

2021–2026

Gen 14

Fourteenth generation, 2021 to the present (Sturgis Ford). The 10R80 10-speed automatic carries over from Gen 13 (2017 and later), and the 2.7L and 3.0L Nano EcoBoost engines appear in Ford's 2021-2022 recall record.

NHTSA complaints per catalog listing are 1.62 for 2021 (1,040 complaints across 643 listings) and 1.09 for 2022 (603 across 553), against a generation median of 1.35. We have no complaint rate for 2023 through 2026 because our NHTSA complaint data has no count for those years, so we cannot test those years against our rule. Ad mentions: 2021 stands out at 97 of 506 enriched ads (19.2%); 2022-2023 are near zero (3 of 458 and 5 of 454). Ad mentions are not failures, and 2021 does not meet the complaint-rate half of our rule (1.62 against 2.7, twice the median).

Questions people actually ask

What Ford F-150 years should you avoid?

We don't tell you to skip a year; we flag it by a fixed rule (see 'Years flagged' in each generation), and exactly one F-150 year trips it: 2004. That year has 7.57 NHTSA complaints per catalog listing (2,036 across 269 listings) against a Gen 11 median of 1.65, and ads mention a problem in 28 of 184 enriched ads (15.2%) against a 9.6% median, with the 'rust' flaw excluded from the count. Two more years come close on the first test and fail the second. 2005: 3.76 complaints per listing (2.3 times the Gen 11 median), but with rust excluded only 15 of 199 ads (7.5%) mention a problem against a 9.6% median. 2011: 4.92 complaints per listing against a Gen 12 median of 2.40 (2.05 times), but 15 of 317 ads (4.7%) against a 4.8% median. Ad mentions are not confirmed failures.

What are the most common Ford F-150 problems?

It depends on the engine and generation. Gen 10 (1997-2003): spark plugs that blow out of the two-valve V8's head. Gen 11 (2004-2008): spark plugs that break on removal in the 5.4L 3V, plus visibility complaints on 2004. Gen 12 (2009-2014): timing-chain stretch on 2011-2014 3.5L EcoBoost trucks. Gen 13 (2015-2020): cam phasers on the 3.5L and shift complaints on the 10-speed. Gen 14 (2021 on): recalls more than wear. Each is priced, with sources, in the generation sections.

Do F-150 5.4L spark plugs break?

On the 5.4L 3V (2004-2008 trucks), the two-piece plug can snap during removal. Dwells Automotive puts a trouble-free job at $300-$500, one or two broken plugs at $800-$1,000, and four or more at $1,200-$1,500+. Ford's interval is 100K miles, and the same source suggests pulling them near 80K. RepairPal's standard-job estimate is $299-$391; RepairPal members have filed 50 reports about plugs that are hard to remove.

How much does a 3.5L EcoBoost timing chain or cam phaser job cost?

For 2011-2014 trucks with a P0016 code, Go-Parts gives $2,000-$4,000+ for the chain job, and says wear often shows up between 70K and 100K miles. For 2017-2020 trucks with cold-start rattle, Autos of Chicago quotes phasers at $2,400-$2,750 at a specialist and $3,800-$4,500 at a dealer, with a full timing overhaul at $2,850-$3,200 and $4,600-$5,200+. Owner posts range from $4,310 (2024) to a $5,300 dealer quote (2023). These are shop and owner figures, not a quote for your truck.

Is the F-150 10-speed transmission reliable?

Owners and shops report harsh shifts on 10R80 trucks (2017 and later). ShopEarl lists remanufactured units at $3,530-$5,158 before labor and a reflash at 0.8-1.6 labor hours; a March 2025 bulletin (TSB 25-2126) covers a clutch cylinder. We don't have a failure rate, only these reports, plus recalls 17V671000, 18V213000 and 22V188000 that cover linkage pins and a false pressure code. Ask for service records.

Which F-150 generation has the fewest complaints?

Our complaint-per-listing figures are measured against each generation's own median, so compare within a generation, not across. Within Gen 13, the range is 0.68 (2020) to 2.54 (2015); within Gen 14, 1.09 (2022) to 1.62 (2021), and our data has no complaint count for 2023 onward. No year in Gen 10, 12, 13 or 14 trips our rule.
