Every generation: what ownership is like, what breaks at what mileage, what repairs cost, and what to check before you buy.
Search 'Ford Fiesta years to avoid' and the lists agree on the dual-clutch automatic and disagree on the year. CoPilot Search calls 2011 the worst, citing transmission hesitation and shuddering. Other lists point at 2014, and REREV puts the PowerShift in 2011-2016 models. None of them shows a count behind the year.
This page covers the one US generation, 2011-2019: what breaks, what repairs cost where we found sources, and what to check in person. We add our own numbers, NHTSA complaints per catalog listing and how often ads mention a problem, always with the denominator. Ad mentions are not confirmed failures.
Our fixed rule flags 2012 and 2014. The generation median is 2.54 complaints per listing. 2012 runs 14.02 (617 complaints across 44 listings) and 2014 runs 5.60 (504 complaints across 90 listings). 2011 has the most complaints in total (730 complaints across 59 listings) but a lower rate (12.37) because the catalog holds more 2011 listings. 2018 runs lowest at 0.69 (35 complaints across 51 listings). Power Train is the leading NHTSA component in those years, and the DPS6 automatic is the documented transmission problem. Ford's own warranty programs document that transmission whatever any flag says.
problems cluster by generation, not by badge — know which one you're looking at
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 0.69 for 2018 (35 complaints across 51 listings) to 14.02 for 2012 (617 across 44), against a generation median of 2.54. The highest year, 2012, is 5.5 times that median. Flagged by our rule: 2012, 2014. In every year from 2011 to 2018 Power Train is the leading NHTSA component or tied for it (2018 is a tie with Unknown or Other at 7 each) (2011: Power Train (230), Structure (96), Unknown Or Other (33); 2014: Power Train (155), Unknown Or Other (52), Engine (47); 2018: Unknown Or Other (7), Power Train (7), Electrical System (4)). In 2019 it is Back Over Prevention, the rearview camera (Back Over Prevention (28), Power Train (16)). We have not read the complaints one by one, so the items below are the ones we could verify elsewhere.

| CarComplaints puts the average failure mileage at 44,550 for 31 reports of 2012 transmission shudders, and at 17,000 for 50 reports of 2014 'intermittent shudder when taking off', 23,300 for 11 reports of 2014 shift shuddering and 29,700 for 8 (all search snippets, different problem labels, no single window). One 2014 owner reports a new clutch and the shudder back six months later | DPS6 PowerShift dual-clutch shudder and clutch/TCM failure (2011-2016 automatics, later cars improved) | King's Auto Repair quotes $3,500 flat for a DPS6 clutch job that includes the clutch assembly, a new TCM, input shaft seals and gear oil (36 months/36,000 miles shop warranty). RepairPal lists a Fiesta clutch replacement at $1,523-$1,967 across all years, which is not a DPS6-specific figure (search snippet). A 2016 owner on Reddit was quoted up to $4,000 to rebuild a DPS6 at 145,000 miles (search snippet). A separate poster was quoted $5,500 and a reply said $2,000-$3,000 at a transmission shop (search snippet). These come from different bases (a shop, an all-years average, owner quotes) and are not merged | The Fiesta with the DPS6 dual-clutch automatic (Ford calls it PowerShift) shares its transmission with the 2012-2016 Focus. Owners describe shudder pulling away from a stop, a rough 1-2 shift, and clutch and TCM replacements (Car and Driver, read in full). Car and Driver reports Ford extended the powertrain warranty on affected cars in 2014 to 7 years/100,000 miles and says Ford improved the transmission after the 2016 model year, so later cars drew fewer complaints. Ford's supplement 14M02 #7, hosted on NHTSA's site, covers certain 2011-2015 Fiesta and 2012-2016 Focus cars: the TCM is covered 10 years/150,000 miles from warranty start, and a one-time TCM replacement beyond those limits ran through June 30, 2025. By date, that one-time window has closed, and 7 years from warranty start has run out for every car in this range (our inference from dates, not a Ford statement). A class-action settlement covered the 2011-2016 Fiesta and 2012-2016 Focus (Cars.com, search snippet); we did not read its terms and do not say whether claims are open. The 5-speed manual does not have this transmission (REREV and Wikipedia list it separately), so the manual sidesteps the problem. King's Auto Repair lists its DPS6 job for 2011-2019 cars |
| Any; recall coverage depends on build date and, for some campaigns, on where the car was registered | Door latch failure (2011-2015; the recall was re-issued) | Free at a Ford dealer when a recall is open. One 2011 owner on CarComplaints paid a $100 extended-warranty deductible to have a latch replaced (search snippet) | REREV says faulty latches on 2011-2014 cars could let a door open while driving. Our NHTSA records hold five latch campaigns naming the Fiesta: 15V246000 (2012-2014 builds, expanded to 2011), 17V210000 (2014), 20V177000 (2014-2015, cars sold or registered in a list of states), 20V331000 (2011-2014, written for cars repaired incorrectly under earlier recalls) and 23V775000 (2015). Check the VIN for each one, not only the first |
| Not verified | Fiesta ST 1.6L EcoBoost cylinder head cracking from low coolant (2014-2015 recall; Go-Parts says the flaw runs to 2019) | Recall 17V209000 is free at a dealer when open; its remedy added a coolant level sensor and PCM software for an earlier warning (Go-Parts, search snippet). Out of recall, one UK owner on Reddit was quoted 4,000 pounds for a new cylinder head (search snippet, a different market, a different currency) | NHTSA campaign 17V209000 covers 2014-2015 Fiesta ST with the 1.6L: with too little coolant the head may overheat, crack and leak oil, and Ford OEM DTC adds a fire risk. The recall text names the Fiesta ST only |
| Not verified | Hood-latch sensor 'hood ajar' warning and alarm (2014-2019) | Not verified | REREV lists the persistent 'hood open' alert from a faulty sensor among the electrical complaints, and a Go-Parts guide (search snippet) says a failed sensor in the hood latch can show a Hood Ajar warning with the hood closed. We found no sourced repair price for it. eBay sellers of the OEM latch say the sensor is part of the switch, not a separate part (search snippets) |

Some campaigns are shared with other Ford models. Confirm by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. |
A year is flagged by our rule only when all three hold: (1) its NHTSA complaints per catalog listing is at least 2.0x the median for its generation, (2) the share of ads that mention a problem is above the generation median, and (3) we track at least 30 listings for that year. The cutoff was fixed before we looked. Ad mentions are not failures, and a flag is a reason to inspect harder, not a verdict on any one car. We also re-ran the ad test with the 'rust' flaw left out, because the ad reader counts phrases like 'no rust' as mentions, and publish a flag only if it passes both ways.
Complaints add up over a car's whole life, so older years in a generation can look worse here than they are. Read this flag next to the complaint details below.

We don't tell you to skip a year; we flag by a fixed rule. Our fixed rule flags 2012 and 2014. Third-party lists name 2011 (CoPilot) and 2014, and say the 2011-2016 automatics are the risk. In our data 2012 runs 14.02 complaints per listing (617 complaints across 44 listings), 2014 runs 5.60 (504 complaints across 90 listings) and 2013 runs 13.10, against a 2011-2019 median of 2.54. A 5-speed manual avoids the PowerShift problem.
The Fiesta with the DPS6 dual-clutch automatic can shudder pulling away, shift roughly from first to second and wear its clutches. Car and Driver reports Ford extended the warranty in 2014 to 7 years/100,000 miles and improved the transmission after 2016. Ford's supplement 14M02 #7, hosted on NHTSA's site, covers the TCM for 10 years/150,000 miles from warranty start for certain 2011-2015 cars. A shop we read quotes $3,500 for a clutch, TCM and seal job.
Probably not for most cars, by date, but check by VIN. Seven years from the start of warranty has passed for every 2011-2016 car by our own date arithmetic, not a Ford statement. The one-time TCM replacement in supplement 14M02 #7 ran through June 30, 2025, which has also passed. A dealer can tell you whether any coverage remains on a given VIN.
It depends on the source and the job. King's Auto Repair quotes $3,500 flat for a DPS6 clutch, TCM, seals and gear oil. RepairPal lists $1,523-$1,967 for a Fiesta clutch across all years (search snippet, not DPS6-specific). A 2016 owner on Reddit was quoted up to $4,000 to rebuild a DPS6. These are different bases and we do not average them.
We don't rank reliability. The ST's 1.6L EcoBoost is under NHTSA recall 17V209000 for 2014-2015 cars: low coolant can overheat, crack the cylinder head and leak oil, and Ford OEM DTC adds a fire risk. Ask for the coolant history and confirm the recall was done. The ST has a 6-speed manual, not the DPS6.
In our numbers they draw fewer complaints: 2018 runs 0.69 per listing and 2017 1.79 against a 2.54 median, but those are the years with the fewest listings in our catalog, so read them loosely. Car and Driver says Ford improved the PowerShift after the 2016 model year. The 2019 cars have two rearview camera recalls on file (24V951000, 25V695000).
