Every generation: what ownership is like, what breaks at what mileage, what repairs cost, and what to check before you buy.
Search 'Ford Focus years to avoid' and the lists agree on the dual-clutch automatic without agreeing on the years. CoPilot names 2012 and 2014. REREV names 2012, 2013 and 2014. Sealight-led names 2007-2008 for suspension and steering, and 2016 for the transmission. A Reddit post from a dealership employee calls 2008-2010 the most reliable. None of them shows a count behind the years.
This page walks three Focus runs from 2000 to 2018: the original 2000-2007 car, the restyled 2008-2011 coupe and sedan, and the 2012-2018 generation with the DPS6 PowerShift automatic. For each, it shows what breaks, what repairs cost where we found sources, and what to check in person. We add our own numbers, NHTSA complaints per catalog listing and how often ads mention a problem, always with the denominator. Ad mentions are not confirmed failures.
Our fixed rule flags no Focus year. The highest complaint rates on this page are on the oldest cars, from small catalog bases (2000: 3,738 complaints across 9 listings, 415.33 per listing against a 2000-2007 median of 34.50), and the largest complaint counts in the newer cars are on 2012 (3,770 complaints across 256 listings, 14.73 per listing against a 2012-2018 median of 5.47), 2014 (2,606 complaints across 476 listings, 5.47) and 2013 (2,112 complaints across 224 listings, 9.43). 2012 has the highest rate in its generation (14.73 per listing, 3,770 complaints across 256 listings against a 2012-2018 median of 5.47, 2.7 times), so it passes the first test. It stops at the second: 16 of 171 enriched ads (9.4%) mention a problem, which equals the generation median of 9.4% (2012 is the median year) rather than exceeding it. The oldest years, 2000 and 2001, pass the first two tests but fail the third: we track only 9 and 10 listings.

NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 4.88 for 2006 (205 complaints across 42 listings) to 415.33 for 2000 (3,738 across 9), against a generation median of 34.50. The highest year, 2000, is 12.0 times that median. No year reaches the 2.0x our rule needs together with an above-median ad share and 30 or more listings, so nothing is flagged. The NHTSA record is led by Electrical System (1088), Engine And Engine Cooling (312), Suspension (257) for 2000 and by Electrical System (376), Fuel System, Gasoline (206), Engine And Engine Cooling (156) for 2001. NHTSA files some 2000-2003 Focus complaints (52 in 2000, 31 in 2001, 43 in 2002 and 40 in 2003, by our count) under the model name FORD instead of FOCUS; we sampled these, saw the summaries name the Focus, and included them. We have not read the complaints one by one, so we do not say what failed beyond the items below.

| No consistent window found | Ignition lock cylinder fails to turn or stick (2000-2004 reports) | RepairPal puts a 2003 Focus ignition switch at $171-$223 (search snippet). One owner post from December 2003 reports a lock cylinder replaced for $240 (search snippet). A 2000 Focus owner reports a dealership quote of $300 (Edmunds forum, search snippet). We did not merge these into one range. | The Center for Auto Safety calls the ignition lock key cylinder the most common unresolved Focus defect, and mentions a Ford service bulletin from September 2002 with a repair kit (search snippet). Go-Parts says there is no active recall for the electrical ignition switch on 2000-2004 cars, only many owner complaints and a TSB for the lock cylinder (search snippet). We found no count of how many cars were affected, and the repair figures are one-off quotes from different years. |
| Sources disagree: 60,000 (a forum owner on the SPI engine), 90,000 (iFixit snippet, citing forums) and 120,000 miles (CarsCounsel snippet) | Timing belt replacement on belt-driven engines (2000-2004) | RepairPal lists labor $378-$555 and parts $332-$364 for a Focus timing belt, all years (search snippet). A Focus Fanatics owner says about $500 from someone who knows the Zetec (search snippet). | Belt-driven engines need the belt replaced on schedule; the sources above give three different intervals, so use the owner's manual for your engine and ask for the receipt. Whether a given engine is an interference design differs by engine, and we did not find one clear source for each. |

| any | Recalls on file (1 campaign in our records): 07V541000 (2008) | Free at a Ford dealer when open | NHTSA has few campaigns on file for these years. 07V541000 is a driver air bag module recall for 2008. We found no sourced repair cost or mileage window for a recurring 2008-2011 problem: pages we searched list generic wear items (spark plugs, coils, water pump) with no Focus-specific pattern we could verify twice, so we add none. A Reddit post from a dealership employee calls 2008-2010 the most reliable Focus years; that is one opinion, not data. Confirm recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. |
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 4.06 for 2015 (1,022 complaints across 252 listings) to 14.73 for 2012 (3,770 across 256), against a generation median of 5.47. The highest year, 2012, is 2.7 times that median. No year reaches the 2.0x our rule needs together with an above-median ad share and 30 or more listings, so nothing is flagged. In every year from 2012 to 2015 the leading NHTSA components are Power Train and Steering (2012: Power Train (957), Steering (764), Structure (266); 2015: Power Train (429), Steering (74), Unknown Or Other (68)). We have not read the complaints one by one, so the transmission and steering items below are the ones we could verify elsewhere.

| Owner reports vary widely: CarComplaints puts the average failure mileage at 18,150 for 2014 shudder complaints (47 reports, search snippet); one 2014 owner had the clutch repaired at 20,000 and 40,000 miles with the shudder back at 60,000 (search snippet); a 2015 owner had clutches replaced at 52,000 miles under extended warranty and the fault returned about 10,000 miles later (search snippet) | DPS6 PowerShift dual-clutch shudder and clutch/TCM failure (2012-2016) | King's Auto Repair quotes $3,500 flat for a DPS6 clutch job that includes the clutch assembly, a new TCM, input shaft seals and gear oil (36 months/36,000 miles shop warranty). John's Auto Care lists a clutch at $1,500-$2,000 and a TCM at $500-$1,000, and a used transmission at $1,800-$3,400 installed or a new one at $3,500-$6,800. These are two shops and are quoted separately; the shops do not describe identical jobs | The 2012-2016 Focus with the DPS6 dual-clutch transmission (Ford calls it PowerShift) is the signature problem of this generation: shudder, hesitation and clutch wear. Ford's program 14M01 extended coverage on the DPS6 clutch, input shaft seals and TCM software to 7 years/100,000 miles (search snippet; the Ford OEM DTC page refused our fetch). Ford's supplement 14M02 #7, hosted on NHTSA's site and read in full, covers certain 2011-2015 Fiesta and 2012-2016 Focus cars: the Focus build window is August 1, 2010 to November 5, 2015, the TCM is covered 10 years/150,000 miles from warranty start, and a one-time TCM replacement beyond those limits ran through June 30, 2025. By date, that one-time window has closed, and 7 years from warranty start has run out for every car in the build window (our inference from dates, not a Ford statement). A class-action settlement covered 2012-2016 Focus cars (Cars.com, search snippet) and Car and Driver reported a proposed floor of $30 million in cash reimbursement (search snippet); we did not read the settlement terms and do not say whether claims are still open. John's Auto Care calls 2017-2018 somewhat improved; we did not verify what changed |
| CarComplaints puts the average at 82,300 miles (122 reports, fetched); a 2012 owner reports failure at 72,000 (search snippet) | Electric power steering failure (2012 and later) | CarComplaints lists a typical repair of $1,900 (fetched). A 2012 owner paid $2,300 (Reddit, search snippet). RepairPal lists a Focus rack and pinion at $2,068-$2,298 across all model years (search snippet). Go-Parts lists a steering rack assembly at about $900-$2,200 for 2012-2018 (search snippet). The four figures come from different sources and are not merged. | CarComplaints calls 2012 the first Focus year with electric power steering and a massive failure count. The 2012 owner on Reddit says the dealer and Ford told him there was no recall. NHTSA campaign 14V514000 covers a narrow batch of 2014 Focus and C-Max built August 8-15, 2014 with incorrectly assembled steering gears; that is a separate, small recall. |

Equipment recalls and the Focus BEV HID headlight recall are removed from our records. Some campaigns are shared with other Ford models. Confirm by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. |

We don't tell you to skip a year; we flag by a fixed rule. Our fixed rule flags no Focus year. Third-party lists name 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016 (the dual-clutch automatic) and 2007-2008 (suspension and steering). In our data 2012 runs 14.73 complaints per listing (3,770 complaints across 256 listings), 2013 runs 9.43 and 2014 runs 5.47, against a 2012-2018 median of 5.47. The DPS6 transmission problem is documented by Ford's own warranty programs, whatever the flag says.
The 2012-2016 Focus with the DPS6 dual-clutch automatic can shudder, hesitate or slip as the clutches wear. Ford's program 14M01 extended coverage for the clutch, input shaft seals and TCM software to 7 years/100,000 miles (search snippet), and Ford's supplement 14M02 #7, hosted on NHTSA's site, covers the TCM for 10 years/150,000 miles from warranty start. The one-time TCM replacement beyond those limits ended June 30, 2025. A shop we read quotes $3,500 for a clutch, TCM and seal job; another lists a clutch at $1,500-$2,000.
Probably not for most cars, by date, but check by VIN. Ford's 14M01 program extended the clutch, input shaft seals and TCM software to 7 years/100,000 miles from warranty start (search snippet). Seven years from the start of warranty has passed for every 2012-2016 car by our own date arithmetic, not a Ford statement. The NHTSA-hosted supplement 14M02 #7 gave a one-time TCM replacement through June 30, 2025, which has also passed. A dealer can tell you whether any coverage remains on a given VIN.
NHTSA's leading components for 2012 are Power Train and Steering. CarComplaints calls 2012 the first Focus year with electric power steering and a high failure count: 122 reports in its steering problem with a typical repair of $1,900 and an average failure mileage of 82,300 (page read in full). The transmission shudder on the DPS6 automatic is the other documented problem. We have not read the complaints one by one.
We don't rank reliability. Our own numbers: the 2008-2011 cars run the lowest NHTSA complaint rates on this page (median 3.05 complaints per listing against 5.47 for 2012-2018) and have only a few campaigns on file. We found no sourced repair pattern for these cars, so we list none. A dealership employee on Reddit calls 2008-2010 the most reliable years; that is one opinion.
Per AutoPadre (search snippet), 2000-2004 North American Focus engines have timing belts except the 2.3L, and 2005-2018 engines have chains except the 1.0L. Sources disagree on the belt interval: 60,000 miles from a forum owner, 90,000 from iFixit's snippet and 120,000 from CarsCounsel's snippet. Check your owner's manual and ask for the receipt.
