Every generation: what ownership is like, what breaks at what mileage, what repairs cost, and what to check before you buy.
Search 'Accord years to avoid' and the lists disagree. CoverageX points at 2003-2005 for the V6 automatic, 2008-2009 for oil burning and rear brakes, 2013 for early CVTs and 2018 for the 1.5T turbo. CarGurus calls the 2003-2007 generation arguably the worst. A Reddit thread says 2005. The conflict is the clue: an Accord's problems depend on the engine and transmission combination more than on the year.
Four repairs come up again and again. The V6 automatic transmission on 2003-2005 cars, replaced for $3,500-$6,500 in one source. VCM cylinder deactivation, which burns oil and fouls plugs on 2008-2012 V6 cars. The starter on 2013 cars. And oil dilution in the 1.5T turbo on 2018-2019 cars. Each is priced below with its sources, or marked where we could not find a second one.
This page walks each generation: what breaks at what mileage, what the repair costs, and what to check when you stand in front of one. We also show our own numbers (NHTSA complaints per catalog listing and how often ads mention a problem), always with the denominators. Our fixed rule flags no Accord year; the near-miss, 2023, is explained in the FAQ.
problems cluster by generation, not by badge — know which one you're looking at
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 10.60 for 2001 to 56.32 for 1998, against a generation median of 19.60. 1998 is 2.9 times that median (1,239 complaints across 22 listings), but we track only 22 listings for it and our rule needs 30, and no enriched ads exist for it, so it is not flagged. 1999 is 22.19 (1.1 times the median) and 2000 is 19.60. These rates are high in every year because the cars are old and have had 25 years to collect complaints; compare years inside this generation, not against newer ones. Top complaint areas are the power train, electrical system and engine.

| Not verified | Automatic transmission failure (slipping, no reverse, hard shifts) | $1,700 for a used replacement unit under a Honda Care contract with a $100 deductible (one owner report); out-of-warranty repairs sometimes up to $4,000 (HondaProblems, a 2015 article). | CarComplaints counts 150 transmission failure complaints on the 2002 Accord alone. Honda extended the transmission warranty to 93 months or 109,000 miles for 2000-2001 Accords as part of a class action settlement; that coverage has long expired, and other years were not included. Ask for service records and test shifts cold and warm, including reverse. |
| any | Recalls on early cars: transmission cover (98V018000), front ball joints (99V069000), rear lower control arms (00V184000) | Free at a Honda dealer when the recall is open | 98V018000: a casting irregularity in the right-side transmission cover on 1998 sedans and coupes built from late 1997. 99V069000: ball joints that can wear out prematurely and, in the worst case, separate. 00V184000: rear suspension lower arms that could break from improper welding. Confirm each by VIN. |
| any | Recalls: ignition switch (02V120000, 03V423000, 05V025000) and V6 timing belt tensioner (02V226000) | Free at a Honda dealer when the recall is open | The ignition-switch recalls cover degraded switch contacts and interlock wear that can let the key turn without the transmission in park. 02V226000: on V6 cars a misaligned water-pump tensioner pulley could contact a cylinder head bolt and damage the timing belt. Confirm each by VIN. |
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 2.09 for 2007 to 13.79 for 2003, against a generation median of 3.15. 2003 is 4.4 times that median (2,013 complaints across 146 listings) and 2004 is 1.9 times (1,018 across 171). 2003 passes the complaint test but not the ad test: 12 of 102 enriched ads (11.8%) mention a problem, below the 15.7% median. 2004 is under the 2.0 times cutoff. So our rule flags no year. Air bags and the power train are the top complaint areas in most years.

| About 110,000 miles (2004 average); one 2005 EX-V6 at 168,000 | V6 automatic transmission failure (2003-2005 worst reported) | CarComplaints average $2,990 for the 2004 (207 complaints). Dealer quotes of $4,100 (2005 V6) and $4,350 (2003, cut to $2,350 after a goodwill appeal to American Honda). CoverageX gives $3,500-$6,500 for a replacement automatic and $2,300-$6,000 for a rebuild. | CarGurus calls this generation arguably the worst Accord, citing widespread V6 transmission trouble. Honda issued 04V176000 for heat build-up between the second gears that can chip or break teeth. If a transmission has already failed once, ask what was installed. |
| any | Power steering hose recall (12V222000, 2003-2007 V6) | Free at a Honda dealer when the recall is open | Filed in 2012 for certain 2003-2007 Accord V6 cars alongside 2007-2008 Acura TL. Confirm by VIN. |
| any | Takata air bag inflator recalls (15V320000, 15V370000, 16V178000, 18V268000, 19V499000, 19V501000) | Free at a Honda dealer when the recall is open | Several driver and passenger inflator recalls cover these years, and CarGurus flags the Takata air bag recall as affecting this generation. Do not skip the VIN check: an open inflator recall is a safety issue first and a price issue second. |
| any | Other recalls: 2003 wiper motor (08V169000), 2005 fuse box and fuel pump power (05V132000, 07V097000) | Free at a Honda dealer when the recall is open | 08V169000 covers about 351,000 model year 2003 Accords: water can enter the wiper motor breather and corrode it. 05V132000: a loose terminal in the main fuse box may cut fuel pump power so the engine may not start. Confirm each by VIN. |
| 105,000 / 7 years | V6 timing belt and water pump (service, every 105,000 miles or 7 years) | Water pump replacement $756-$1,006 (RepairPal); water pump parts $150-$300, adding $300-$600 when done with belts and tensioner (Autosfieldr). | The interval is for the 2004-2017 V6 (Go-Parts). Ask for the receipt. If there is none, budget for it. |
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 1.25 for 2012 to 5.85 for 2008, against a generation median of 1.55. 2008 is 3.8 times that median (1,521 complaints across 260 listings) and passes the complaint test. It fails the ad test: 12 of 183 enriched ads (6.6%) mention a problem, below the 7.5% median. 2009 is 1.66 times (727 across 283), under the cutoff. So our rule flags no year. Top complaint areas for 2008 and 2009 are the hydraulic brakes, air bags and engine.

| About 60,000 miles (2008 plug complaints average) | V6 VCM oil consumption and fouled spark plugs | $180 average for the fouled spark plug repair on a 2008 (32 complaints on CarComplaints). A VCM-related engine replacement is the expensive end; we found no verified price. | HondaRide says VCM causes oil consumption, fouled plugs and failed active motor mounts. CarMechan describes uneven cylinder wall wear on the 8th-gen V6. CoverageX links VCM to oil burning on 2008-2017 V6 Accords. Check the oil level on the dipstick at the visit and ask how often it has been topped off. |
| 15,000-20,000 miles (rear pads, one source) | Rear brake pads wear out early | $381-$438 for a 2008 brake pad replacement (RepairPal, not axle-specific). | 1A Auto says Accord rear pads can wear in 15,000-20,000 miles. AA1Car reports Honda revised the rear pad part number for 2008 and later cars. SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC is the top NHTSA complaint area for 2008, 2009 and 2010 in our data. Look at pad thickness on the rear axle. |
| any | Automatic transmission secondary shaft bearing recall (11V395000, 2005-2010) | Free at a Honda dealer when the recall is open | The outer race of the secondary shaft bearing may break under certain driving styles, causing noise and possible loss of drive. Confirm by VIN. |
| any | Recalls: air bag control unit corrosion (16V056000), engine wiring harness (11V004000), V6 damper bracket bolts (10V640000), side curtain inflator (12V030000) | Free at a Honda dealer when open | 16V056000: air bag control units on 2008-2010 Accords may corrode and fail. 11V004000: a wiring harness connector on 2010 cars could cause intermittent spark or a stall. 10V640000: 2010-2011 V6 front damper bracket bolts may not have been tightened properly, with possible loss of steering. 12V030000: 2012 side curtain inflator out of specification. Several Takata passenger inflator recalls also cover these years. Confirm by VIN. |
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 2.14 for 2017 to 4.77 for 2013, against a generation median of 2.77. 2013 is 1.7 times that median (1,427 complaints across 299 listings) and 2016 is 1.1 times; neither reaches the 2.0 times cutoff. 2013 has 17 of 217 enriched ads (7.8%) mentioning a problem against a 5.2% median, so it would pass the ad test, but it fails the complaint test. Top areas are steering, electrical and engine.

| About 54,600 miles (2013 average); grinding around 50,000 (HondaProblems) | Starter failure (2013 worst reported) | $620 average on the 2013 (117 complaints). RepairPal $591-$963 for a 2013 starter; Samarins $360-$620 for 2013-2017. | HondaProblems describes starter grinding on 2013-2015 Accords and Crosstours. If it cranks slowly or grinds, have it checked rather than waiting to be stranded. |
| Not verified | CVT judder on 2013-2015 four-cylinders (start clutch) | Honda extended the CVT warranty to 100,000 miles or 10 years for affected VINs (Rohnert Park Transmission). Out-of-pocket cost not verified. | Recall 20V769000 covers 2013-2015 four-cylinder CVT Accords registered in certain states and concerns the driveshaft. Judder pulling away from a stop is the sign to look for. |
| About 70,000 miles (2013 average) | Electric power steering failure while driving (2013) | $2,170 average on the 2013 (31 complaints). One owner quote near $1,100 (AboutLawsuits); another about $3,200 for EPS (CarComplaints, 2025). | NHTSA investigated Accord power steering complaints. The quotes span a 3x range, so treat any single number loosely. Check that steering effort is even at parking speed. |
| any | Recalls: battery sensor (17V418000), fuel tank neck (13V297000), 4-cylinder engine (15V121000), fuel pump (19V060000, 23V858000) | Free at a Honda dealer when open | 17V418000: water can enter the battery sensor case and short it (2013-2016). 13V297000: 2013 LEV II fuel tank neck out of specification so the pump may not seal. 15V121000 covers certain 2014-2015 four-cylinders. Confirm each by VIN. |
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 2.31 for 2021 to 6.67 for 2018, against a generation median of 2.87. 2018 is 2.3 times that median (2,013 complaints across 302 listings) and passes the complaint test. It fails the ad test: 1 of 212 enriched ads (0.5%) mentions a problem, below the 2.0% median (only 2018-2020 have enriched ads). So our rule flags no year. The top NHTSA areas for 2018 and 2019 are the engine, forward collision avoidance and the gasoline fuel system.

| Not verified | 1.5T oil dilution (fuel in the oil), 2018-2020 | $300 for a dealer service in one owner thread (AccordXClub). Honda's software update (TSB 18-086) for 2018-2019 is the fix named by VehicleBar. | CoverageX calls 2018 the worst year for 1.5T dilution and says it was mostly resolved from 2021. CarComplaints counts 11 gasoline-in-oil complaints on the 2018. GarageHub says 2018 cars without the update are the highest risk. Apex Tech Nation links fuel-diluted oil to a cold-start rattle from the VTC actuator. Ask whether the update was done. |
| Not verified | A/C condenser leaks (2018-2019) | Not verified - no source priced a repair | GarageHub lists pinhole leaks in the condenser on 2018-2019 cars and cites a TSB (as stated by the source). Apex Tech Nation says this weakness is shared with the CR-V and Civic. Run the A/C on a hot day and check for cooling. |
| any | Unexpected automatic emergency braking (NHTSA investigation, 2018-2019) | Not applicable; no repair priced | In February 2022 NHTSA opened a probe into 2018-2019 Accords and 2017-2019 CR-Vs after 278 complaints; in April 2024 it was upgraded to nearly 3 million vehicles (Consumer Reports, Car and Driver). Our data shows forward collision avoidance among the top complaint areas for 2018-2022. Ask the seller if it has ever braked by itself. |
| any | Recalls: body control module software (20V771000), back-up camera (18V629000), seat belt buckle (23V158000), fuel pump (20V314000, 21V215000), rear seat belt retractor (21V900000), occupant sensor (24V064000) | Free at a Honda dealer when open | 20V771000 covers a software error in 2018-2020 sedans and hybrids. 18V629000: back-up camera display on certain 2018 cars. 23V158000: front buckle on 2018-2019 cars. 21V900000: rear retractor on 2021 cars. Confirm each by VIN. |
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 0.24 for 2026 to 3.18 for 2023, against a generation median of 1.16. 2023 is 2.7 times that median (232 complaints across 73 listings) and its ad rate is above the median (3 of 49 enriched ads, 6.1%, against a 1.0% median), so it passes the all-flaws test. All three of those mentions are rust, and with rust excluded the test fails, so it is not flagged (see the FAQ). Newer years have had less time to collect complaints, so their lower rates partly reflect age, not quality.

| any | Accord Hybrid software recall: loss of drive power (25V785000, 2023-2025) | Free software update at a Honda dealer | American Honda recalled about 256,000 model year 2023-2025 Accord Hybrids in November 2025: the integrated control module can reset while driving and cut power. Confirm by VIN. |
| any | Other recalls: transmission (23V588000), fuel pump (24V763000), seat fasteners (24V859000, 26V054000), spare tire (26V366000, 26V663000) | Free at a Honda dealer when open | CarBuzz notes the 2024 model year was also recalled for the fuel pump and for seat tightening. 23V588000 covers an electronic transmission on certain 2023 Accord Hybrids. Confirm each by VIN. |
| any | Forward collision avoidance complaints (no third-party source on cause) | Not applicable; no repair priced | Forward collision avoidance and steering are among the top NHTSA complaint areas for 2023-2025 in our data. The NHTSA probe cited under Gen 10 covered 2018-2019 cars; we found no source tying it to this generation. |

We don't tell you to skip a year; we flag by a fixed rule (see 'How we flag years'), and no Accord year trips it. The near-miss is 2023: 3.18 NHTSA complaints per catalog listing (232 across 73 listings) against a Gen 11 median of 1.16, which is 2.7 times, and 3 of 49 enriched ads (6.1%) mention a problem against a 1.0% median. All three of those mentions are the 'rust' flaw, so it fails our rust-excluded check, and 73 listings is a small first-year sample. Other close calls: 2003 has 13.79 complaints per listing (2,013 across 146), 4.4 times the Gen 7 median of 3.15, but 11.8% of its ads mention a problem against a 15.7% median. 2008 has 5.85 (1,521 across 260), 3.8 times the Gen 8 median, with 6.6% of ads against 7.5%. 2018 has 6.67 (2,013 across 302), 2.3 times its median, with 0.5% of ads against 2.0%. Lists that name 2003-2005, 2008-2009, 2013 and 2018 are pointing at real complaint clusters; our rule asks for the ads to agree too.
CarComplaints averages $2,990 at about 110,000 miles across 207 complaints on the 2004. Dealer quotes in owner threads were $4,100 (2005 V6) and $4,350 (2003), the latter cut to $2,350 after a goodwill appeal to American Honda. CoverageX gives $3,500-$6,500 for a replacement automatic and $2,300-$6,000 for a rebuild; one owner paid $1,700 for a used unit through a service contract. The mileage window is not settled: one 2005 EX-V6 failed at 168,000 miles.
VCM is Honda's cylinder deactivation on the V6. HondaRide says it causes oil consumption, fouled spark plugs and failed active motor mounts; CarMechan describes uneven cylinder wall wear on the 8th-generation V6. CarComplaints counts 32 fouled-spark-plug complaints on the 2008, average repair $180 at about 59,550 miles. CoverageX links VCM oil burning to 2008-2017 V6 Accords. We found no verified price for a VCM-related engine replacement.
The 2018-2020 1.5L turbo. CoverageX calls 2018 the worst and says it was mostly resolved from 2021. Honda's software update TSB 18-086 covers 2018-2019 (VehicleBar); one owner paid $300 for the dealer service (AccordXClub). CarComplaints lists 11 gasoline-in-oil complaints on the 2018. Ask whether the update was done.
RepairPal gives $591-$963 for a 2013 Accord; Samarins gives $360-$620 for 2013-2017. CarComplaints averages $620 at about 54,600 miles across 117 starter failure complaints on the 2013. HondaProblems describes starter grinding on 2013-2015 cars at around 50,000 miles.
We did not rank years by recall count, because one recall often covers many years. The ones to check by VIN: the Takata air bag inflator recalls on 2001-2012 cars, the 2003-2007 V6 power steering hose recall (12V222000), the 2005-2010 secondary shaft bearing recall (11V395000), the 2023-2025 Accord Hybrid software recall (25V785000), and the fuel pump recalls spanning 2013-2024.
