Every generation: what ownership is like, what breaks at what mileage, what repairs cost, and what to check before you buy.
Search 'Honda Civic years to avoid' and the same four problems come up: automatic transmissions on 2001-2005 cars, cracked engine blocks on 2006-2009 1.8L cars, 1.5L turbo oil dilution on 2016-2018 cars, and A/C condenser failures on 2016-2021 cars. PulsCar's by-mileage guide names the same groupings. Honda put warranty extensions on several of them, which changes what a used buyer pays.
This page walks eight Civic generations back to 1988. For each, it shows what breaks, what the repair costs where we found two sources, and what to check in person. The three oldest generations (1988-2000) have too few listings for a firm read, and we say so. We also show our own numbers, NHTSA complaints per catalog listing and how often ads mention a problem, always with the denominators.
Our fixed rule flags two years: 2006 and 2016. Both also pass with the 'rust' flaw excluded from the ad count. Years like 2001 (3.7 times its generation median) and 2022 (7.1 times) have high complaint rates that do not trip the rule, because ads for them rarely mention problems or we lack ad data, and the sections explain each.
problems cluster by generation, not by badge — know which one you're looking at
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 6.22 for 1991 (112 complaints across 18 listings) to 34.50 for 1989 (69 across 2), against a generation median of 23.33. Those rates rest on 2 to 18 listings a year, so they say little. No year has the 30 listings our rule needs, and we have no enriched-ad data for these years, so no year is flagged. The components NHTSA owners name most often are seat belts, electrical system and vehicle speed control.

| any | Recalls on file: front seat belt buckle buttons (95V103001, 1988-1991), automatic transmission park pawl (90V163000, 1990), idle speed control unit (87V173000, 1988) | Free at a Honda dealer when open | 95V103001: the red release buttons marked PRESS can break and drop pieces into the buckle. 90V163000: an improperly machined transmission shaft means the park pawl may not fully engage. 87V173000: the fuel injection control unit can raise idle speed by about 550 rpm in gear. Many of these cars have likely had the work done; confirm by VIN. |
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 15.29 for 1995 (214 complaints across 14 listings) to 26.33 for 1993 (158 across 6), against a generation median of 24.00. The share of enriched ads that mention a problem runs from 1 of 5 (20.0%, 1995) to 2 of 2 (100%, 1992), median 41.7%, all on five or fewer ads a year. No year has 30 listings, so no year is flagged. NHTSA owners name air bags and the electrical system most often.

| any | Recalls on file: automatic transmission shift cable clip (94V063000, 1992-1994), passenger air bag inflators (93V208000, 1994) | Free at a Honda dealer when open | 94V063000: the clip that joins the shift cable to the shift lever rod can lose retention and come off. 93V208000: the passenger-side air bag modules were fitted with inflators out of specification. Confirm each by VIN. |
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 5.82 for 2000 (297 complaints across 51 listings) to 26.77 for 1999 (348 across 13), against a generation median of 21.28. 1999 is 1.3 times that median and has only 13 listings. Only 1998 (31) and 2000 (51) reach the 30 listings our rule needs, and neither is near 2.0 times. Ad mentions: 6 of 30 enriched ads (20.0%) for 2000 and 4 of 22 (18.2%) for 1998, against a median of 37.5%. No year is flagged. NHTSA owners name air bags most often.

| any | Ignition switch contacts (recall 02V120000, recorded under 1998-2000) | Free at a Honda dealer when the recall is open | NHTSA's record says electrical contacts in the ignition switch can degrade from the high current passing through the switch at start-up. CarFeatures also lists a weakening ignition switch on 1996-2000 Civics. Ask whether it was replaced. |
| age-driven | Rust in salt-belt cars; charging system | Not verified - no source priced a repair | CarFeatures notes rust on cars from salt states and says to test the battery and charging system. Hagerty calls out rust and neglect on these cars. Check rocker panels, rear arches and the floor. |
| any | Recalls on file: front passenger air bag (97V193000, 1997-1998), brake vacuum hose check valve (96V106000, 1996) | Free at a Honda dealer when open | Confirm both by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. |
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing fall from 19.80 for 2001 (1,089 complaints across 55 listings) to 2.80 for 2005 (364 across 130), against a generation median of 5.41. 2001 is 3.7 times that median, but 2 of 31 enriched ads (6.5%) mention a problem against a 26.0% median, so it fails the ad test. 2002 is 1.5 times the median. No year is flagged. NHTSA owners name air bags and the power train most often; 2001's top component is power train (371 of 1,089).

| about 100K-105K (CarComplaints averages) | Automatic transmission failure | $2,320-$2,900 average repair (CarComplaints: 2001 Civic, 683 complaints, $2,320 at 104,750 mi; 2005 Civic, 15 complaints, $2,900 at 101,950 mi) | PulsCar names the 2001-2005 automatic as this generation's weak point. The averages are what complaining owners paid, not a shop quote. Ask for transmission service records, and feel for flares or slips between gears on the test drive. |
| any | Recalls on file: front air bags (15V320000 driver side, 15V370000 passenger side, both recorded under 2001-2005) | Free at a Honda dealer when open | Confirm the status of each by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls; air bag work is the recall type to verify first. |
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing fall from 9.77 for 2006 (1,466 complaints across 150 listings) and 5.52 for 2007 (1,276 across 231) to 1.74 for 2010 (413 across 237), against a generation median of 2.79. 2006 is 3.5 times the median. 2007 is 1.98 times, just under the 2.0 cutoff, and its ad share (14 of 145 enriched ads, 9.7%) is below the 10.4% median, so it is not flagged. NHTSA owners name the engine, visibility and air bags most often for 2006.

| about 84K-98K (CarComplaints averages) | Cracked engine block (1.8L, 2006-2009) | $2,640-$2,910 average repair (CarComplaints: 2006, 183 complaints, $2,910 at 98,250 mi; 2007, 79 complaints, $2,640 at 84,000 mi). One owner quote of $8,500 for a dealer engine replacement (VehicleHistory). | The range is wide because the repair depends on whether the shop fixes the block or swaps the engine. PulsCar says Honda issued a warranty extension for the block. That coverage has probably run out, so ask for proof the work was done and look for coolant loss. |
| any | Recalls on file: rear wheel speed sensor O-ring (07V399000, 2006-2007), accelerator pedal mounting (05V509000, 2006), fuel system bracket (08V535000, 2008-2009) | Free at a Honda dealer when open | Confirm each by VIN. 08V535000 covers 128 model year 2008-2009 sedans (Honda's count in the NHTSA record). |
A year is flagged by our rule only when all three hold: (1) its NHTSA complaints per catalog listing is at least 2.0x the median for its generation, (2) the share of ads that mention a problem is above the generation median, and (3) we track at least 30 listings for that year. The cutoff was fixed before we looked. Ad mentions are not failures, and a flag is a reason to inspect harder, not a verdict on any one car.
Complaints add up over a car's whole life, so older years in a generation can look worse here than they are. Read this flag next to the complaint details below.
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 1.00 for 2012 (474 complaints across 472 listings) to 1.31 for 2014 (293 across 223), against a generation median of 1.18. 2014 is 1.1 times the median. 2012 has the highest ad share (47 of 334 enriched ads, 14.1%, against a 7.7% median) but a below-median complaint rate. No year is flagged.

| Not verified | Starter replacement | $547-$966 (RepairPal), from $247 (YourMechanic), one owner quote over $1,100 on a 2013 (Reddit) | These are general Civic starter prices; only one owner thread is tied to this generation. Treat it as a cost reference, not a known weak point. |
| any | Recalls on file: steering column (12V548000, 2012 cars built Oct 26-30, 2012), automatic transmission software (15V574000, 2014-2015) | Free at a Honda dealer when open | 12V548000: these cars were assembled with the incorrect steering column assembly. Confirm each by VIN. |
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing fall from 4.57 for 2016 (1,083 complaints across 237 listings) to 1.14 for 2020 (240 across 211), against a generation median of 1.94. 2016 is 2.4 times that median and 6 of 165 enriched ads (3.6%) mention a problem against a 1.2% median with the 'rust' flaw excluded. 2018 is 1.2 times the median, 2019 1.0 times. NHTSA owners name steering most often; for 2016 it is 408 of 1,083.

| Not verified | A/C condenser failure (warranty extension 19-091) | $586-$728 (RepairPal condenser replacement); owner quotes of about $1,100 for the condenser and $1,840 for compressor and clutch work (Reddit, TorqueNews) | Honda extended the A/C condenser warranty to 10 years from original purchase with no mileage limit, covering 2016-2020 sedans and coupes and 2017-2021 hatchbacks (Avturo, NHTSA TSB). A 2016 car bought new in 2016 is at or past that 10-year line. Ask whether the condenser was replaced, and have the dealer confirm coverage by VIN. |
| Not verified | 1.5L turbo oil dilution (2016-2018) | Not verified - sources describe the warranty fix, not a priced repair | Consumer Reports and WardsAuto report that Honda extended the warranty on certain 2016-2018 1.5L Civics to six years with no mileage limit. Honda calls the problem rare. A 2020 class settlement added reimbursement and a cold-weather software update (LawsuitWatch). Check the oil level and smell, and ask about the software update. |
| any | Recalls on file: 2.0L piston assemblies (16V074000, 2016), electric parking brake (16V725000, 2016), right halfshaft (17V706000, 2017), steering torque sensor magnet (18V663000, 2017-2018) | Free at a Honda dealer when open | Confirm each by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. 23V858000, a fuel system recall that lists Civics among other Honda models and is recorded under 2016-2021, is also on file. |

Complaints add up over a car's whole life, so older years in a generation can look worse here than they are. Read this flag next to the complaint details below.
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing are 7.89 for 2022 (962 complaints across 122 listings), 4.07 for 2023 (338 across 83), 1.12 for 2024 (143 across 128), 0.37 for 2025 (101 across 276) and 0.12 for 2026 (32 across 268), against a generation median of 1.12. Steering accounts for 683 of the 962 complaints for 2022. Recent years have had little time to collect complaints. Our enriched-ad data covers only 2024 in this generation (1 of 95 ads, 1.1%), so the ad half of our rule cannot be checked for 2022 or 2023 and no year is flagged. The complaint rates for 2022 and 2023 are 7.1 and 3.6 times the generation median, but with no ad data for either year the rule cannot flag them.

| Civic Hybrid | 2004-2013 and 2025 (per NHTSA records) | NHTSA lists 5,553 complaint records under CIVIC HYBRID across 2004-2013, mostly overlapping the plain Civic complaints for the same cars. We count each complaint once. We do not price hybrid battery repairs separately. |
| Civic Si and Type R | Si 2006 onward; Type R 2017 onward (per NHTSA records) | Counted inside the generation they belong to. NHTSA lists far fewer complaints under these names than under the base car. |
| Civic CNG and GX | GX 2003-2006; CNG 2010-2013 (per NHTSA records) | NHTSA recall 07V512000 covers certain compressed natural gas Civics, where a severe interior fire near the rear seat may heat the CNG tank unevenly and keep the pressure relief device from venting it. |

We don't tell you to skip a year; we flag by a fixed rule, and two Civic years trip it: 2006 and 2016. 2006 has 9.77 NHTSA complaints per catalog listing (1,466 across 150 listings) against a 2006-2011 median of 2.79, and 7 of 98 enriched ads (7.1%) mention a problem against a 5.6% median with the 'rust' flaw excluded. 2016 has 4.57 (1,083 across 237) against a 2016-2021 median of 1.94, and 6 of 165 ads (3.6%) against 1.2%. 2001 has the highest rate of the 2001-2005 years (19.80 per listing, 1,089 across 55) but only 2 of 31 ads (6.5%) mention a problem against a 26.0% median, so it is not flagged.
PulsCar ties cracked engine blocks to 2006-2009 cars with the 1.8L. CarComplaints counts 183 complaints for the 2006 Civic with an average repair of $2,910 at 98,250 miles, and 79 for the 2007 with $2,640 at 84,000 miles. One owner reported an $8,500 dealer quote for an engine replacement (VehicleHistory). Those are complaining owners' costs, not shop quotes.
Condensers on 2016-2021 Civics have been failing. Honda's warranty extension 19-091 covers the condenser for 10 years from original purchase with no mileage limit on 2016-2020 sedans and coupes and 2017-2021 hatchbacks (Avturo, NHTSA TSB). Outside coverage, RepairPal lists $586-$728 for a condenser replacement, and owners report about $1,100 for the condenser and $1,840 for compressor and clutch work. Ask a Honda dealer to check coverage by VIN.
Fuel can get into the oil on some 2016-2018 Civics with the 1.5L turbo. Consumer Reports and WardsAuto report that Honda extended the warranty on certain cars to six years with no mileage limit, and Honda calls the problem rare. A 2020 settlement added reimbursement and a cold-weather software update (LawsuitWatch). We found no source that priced a repair, so we show none.
PulsCar names the 2001-2005 automatic as that generation's weak point. CarComplaints counts 683 complaints for the 2001 Civic with an average repair of $2,320 at 104,750 miles, and 15 for the 2005 with $2,900 at 101,950 miles. Ask for transmission service records and test it hot and cold.
Yes, NHTSA files them under separate names, and many complaints are listed under more than one. For 2007, CIVIC HYBRID holds 1,268 complaint records against 1,204 for plain CIVIC, but they overlap, so the union is 1,276. We count each complaint once, which is why our totals can be lower than adding the name lists.
