Every generation: what ownership is like, what breaks at what mileage, what repairs cost, and what to check before you buy.
Search 'Honda CR-V years to avoid' and the lists point at a few places. CoPilot warns off 2007, the first year of the third generation, for electrical, door lock and tire wear complaints. AGT Auto adds 2007 to 2009 for air bag, electrical and rear suspension corrosion issues. CarBuzz ranks the 2017-2022 generation poorly for gasoline getting into the oil of the 1.5L turbo, and the 2015-2016 cars for idle vibration.
This page walks six CR-V generations back to 1997. For each, it shows what breaks, what the repair costs where we found sources, and what to check in person. We also show our own numbers, NHTSA complaints per catalog listing and how often ads mention a problem, always with the denominators.
Our fixed rule flags one CR-V year, 2023, and that is a thin signal: 633 complaints across 41 listings, 15.44 complaints per listing against a generation median of 4.66, but only 1 of 26 ads mention a problem. The headline issue, 2017-2019 oil dilution, does not trip the rule: 2018 has the most complaints of any year (2,163 complaints across 204 listings) and is 1.9 times its generation median, short of the 2.0x the rule needs, and ads for it mention a problem less often than the median, so it is not flagged. Warranty history and VIN recall status matter more there than our flag.
problems cluster by generation, not by badge — know which one you're looking at
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 4.75 for 2001 (152 complaints across 32 listings) to 27.00 for 1997 (108 across 4), against a generation median of 6.23. The highest year, 1997, is 4.3 times that median. No year reaches the 2.0x our rule needs together with an above-median ad share and 30 or more listings, so nothing is flagged.

| about 124K (CarComplaints average) | Engine valve trouble | $2,040 average repair (CarComplaints: 2000 CR-V, 20 complaints, $2,040 at 123,950 mi) | This rests on 20 complaints for one model year, and it is an average from complaining owners, not a shop quote. CarComplaints lists engine as the worst complaint area for the 1999 and 2001 as well. Ask for service records and listen for valve noise on a cold start. |
| any | Recalls on file: ignition switch contacts (02V120000, 1998-1999), under-dash wiring harness (99V282000, 1998-1999), driver air bag inflators (20V026000, 20V027000) | Free at a Honda dealer when open | 02V120000: electrical contacts in the ignition switch can degrade from the current drawn at start. 99V282000: a badly routed harness can be damaged by the brake light switch. The highest year, 2003, is 1.5 times that median. No year reaches the 2.0x our rule needs together with an above-median ad share and 30 or more listings, so nothing is flagged.

| about 82K (CarComplaints average) | A/C compressor failure | $1,115-$1,770 typical replacement (RepairPal); $1,860 average among complaining 2004 owners (CarComplaints, 23 complaints, $1,860 at 81,950 mi) | CarComplaints describes the compressor coming apart and damaging other A/C parts, which is why bills run higher than a plain swap. One forum post puts a dead compressor with other parts at about $1,200, and a 2005 owner was quoted $3,000 for compressor, clutch and coil. Test the A/C hot and cold on the drive. |

| about 17K (CarComplaints average onset) | Engine revs when braking | about $5,000 (CarComplaints figure as reported by MotorRank and CarBuzz) | Both sources call this the most common serious complaint on the generation. We did not open the CarComplaints page itself, so treat the cost as a second-hand average from complaining owners. Ask whether the dealer has done any engine software or throttle work. |
| about 87K (CarComplaints 2011 average) | Excessive oil consumption | $4,000 average repair (CarComplaints: 2011 CR-V, 15 complaints, $4,000 at 87,200 mi) | Signs are a low dipstick, blue smoke and hesitation on acceleration (Samarins). The cost rests on 15 complaints for one year. Check the oil level cold and ask how often the owner tops up. |
| any | Rear trailing arm rust (recall 23V228000, 2007-2011 CR-Vs sold or registered in salt-belt states) | Free at a Honda dealer when open | Honda's recall says an accumulation of road salt may corrode the frame and possibly detach the rear trailing arm. CarBuzz also names this and advises an underbody inspection. Confirm by VIN and look at the rear underbody yourself. |
| any | Other recalls on file: automatic transmission secondary shaft bearing (11V395000, 2007-2010), engine wiring harness connector that can stall the engine (11V004000, 2010), many air bag inflator recalls (16V061000, 17V417000, 18V268000, 19V500000 and others) | Free at a Honda dealer when open | 11V395000: a broken bearing outer race may cause noise, a warning light and contact with a transmission sensor. Confirm each by VIN. |

In May 2019 Honda extended the warranty for certain 2017-18 CR-Vs to six years with unlimited mileage (WardsAuto, Consumer Reports); check whether that has expired for the car you are looking at. The dollar figures are averages and ranges, not quotes. |
| varies | CVT problems and other repairs | CVT repair $2,000-$3,500 (CoverageX, a range, not a quote) | CoverageX gives the cost range, and CarBuzz notes forward collision avoidance complaints pushing up the total for this generation. Ask for CVT service records. |

Owners on the CR-V Owners Club forum noted in October 2024 that no remedy timetable had been released for the steering and hybrid fuel pump recalls. Confirm each by VIN. |
| any | 2023-2025 CR-V Hybrid high-pressure fuel pump defect | Free at a Honda dealer when open | PickupTruckTalk reports a manufacturing defect in the high-pressure fuel pump on certain 2023-2025 hybrids, and the CR-V Owners Club thread says the recall language mentions fuel leaks that could lead to fire. We did not find the campaign number in our own NHTSA records, so verify on nhtsa.gov. |
A year is flagged by our rule only when all three hold: (1) its NHTSA complaints per catalog listing is at least 2.0x the median for its generation, (2) the share of ads that mention a problem is above the generation median, and (3) we track at least 30 listings for that year. The cutoff was fixed before we looked. Ad mentions are not failures, and a flag is a reason to inspect harder, not a verdict on any one car. We also re-ran the ad test with the 'rust' flaw left out, because the ad reader counts phrases like 'no rust' as mentions, and publish a flag only if it passes both ways.
Complaints add up over a car's whole life, so older years in a generation can look worse here than they are. Read this flag next to the complaint details below.

|---|---|---|
| CR-V Hybrid | 2020 onward (per NHTSA records) | NHTSA lists the hybrid under CR-V HYBRID. Its records overlap heavily with the plain CR-V records, so we count each complaint once. NHTSA recall 24V744000 (steering gearbox) covers 2023-2025 CR-V and CR-V Hybrid, and a hybrid fuel pump defect is reported on 2023-2025 hybrids (PickupTruckTalk). We do not price hybrid battery repairs separately. |

We don't tell you to skip a year; we flag by a fixed rule, and it flags only 2023, on thin data. Third-party lists commonly name 2007 (CoPilot), 2007 to 2009 (AGT Auto) and the 2017-2019 turbo cars. 2018 has 10.60 NHTSA complaints per catalog listing (2,163 complaints across 204 listings) against a 2017-2022 median of 5.60, 1.9 times, short of the 2.0x cutoff, and ads for it do not mention problems more than the median, so it is not flagged. 2015 has 2.43 (673 complaints across 277 listings) against a 2012-2016 median of 1.54.
On 2017 and 2018 CR-Vs with the 1.5L turbo, owners report the oil level rising above Full with a gasoline smell. CarComplaints lists 89 complaints for the 2017 (average $300 at 12,550 miles). Consumer Reports says NHTSA received complaints about it. In May 2019 Honda extended the warranty for certain 2017-18 CR-Vs to six years with unlimited mileage. CoverageX puts engine damage from dilution at $4,000 to $6,000 or more.
We don't rank generations. CarBuzz ranks the 2007-2011 generation least reliable and the 2017-2022 generation below the 2012-2016 one. Our own numbers: the 2012-2016 generation has the lowest median complaint rate in the catalog at 1.54 per listing, against 5.60 for 2017-2022.
RepairPal puts a CR-V compressor replacement at $1,115 to $1,770 and YourMechanic starts at $1,253. CarComplaints averages $1,860 at 81,950 miles among 23 complaining 2004 owners, whose compressors came apart and damaged other parts.
NHTSA recall 23V228000 covers 2007-2011 CR-Vs sold or ever registered in a list of salt-belt states. Honda says road salt can corrode the frame and possibly detach the rear trailing arm. The repair is free at a Honda dealer. CarBuzz also advises an underbody inspection on this generation.
Yes. NHTSA files it under CR-V HYBRID from 2020 onward. Many hybrid complaints are also filed under the plain CR-V name, so we counted both names and each complaint once.
