Jeep Grand Cherokee — the used buyer's guide

Every generation: what ownership is like, what breaks at what mileage, what repairs cost, and what to check before you buy.

Search 'Grand Cherokee years to avoid' and the lists agree on a block, not a single year. Stivers CDJR's blog names 2011 to 2014. Enthusiast threads point at the same early WK2 years. That block is where our own numbers turn up three flagged years: 2011, 2012 and 2014. The older generations are cheap, and what they cost is mostly age: cooling, four-wheel drive and rust.

Three repairs come up again and again. The air suspension on Overland and Summit trims costs $1,865-$1,945 for an air spring at RepairPal and up to $8,000 in one owner's dealer quote. The 3.6L Pentastar's oil filter housing leaks and costs about $900 to $1,900. And the 5.7L Hemi can wear its camshaft and lifters, with quotes from $3,500 to $6,000. Each item is priced below, with its sources.

This page walks each generation: what breaks at what mileage, what the repair costs, what to check when you're standing in front of one. We also show our own numbers (NHTSA complaints per catalog listing and how often ads mention a problem), always with the denominators. Our fixed rule flags five years: 1999, 2005, 2011, 2012 and 2014.

The generations

problems cluster by generation, not by badge — know which one you're looking at

1993–1998

Gen 1 (ZJ)

Wikipedia dates the launch to model year 1993 and Elk Grove CDJR dates the generation 1993-1998, with the ZJ ending as the WJ arrived for 1999 (Vehicle Bright gives the same five-generation split). Offroad Xtreme names the 4.0L as a sound engine and says most ZJs carry the 5.2L. Our model years for this generation are 1993 to 1998.

NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 49.31 for 1998 (1,430 complaints across 29 listings) to 245.50 for 1993 (982 across 4), against a generation median of 90.30. Those rates are not comparable with newer cars: these Jeeps have had 28 years to collect complaints and we track only 4 to 29 listings per year, so one more or fewer listing moves a rate a lot. Our rule needs 30 listings, and no ZJ year reaches it, so no ZJ year is flagged. NHTSA owners most often name the power train, the hydraulic brakes and engine cooling.

age-driven Cooling system on the 4.0L and V8 (radiator, water pump, thermostat, fan clutch) Not verified - no source priced it; one forum buyer budgets 'an easy $1000' in the first 18 months across many parts A ZJ wiki says the 4.0L and V8 run hot and tells buyers to inspect the radiator, water pump, thermostat, fan clutch and shroud. A forum buyer's list names radiator and water pump among the first things to replace. Check for coolant stains, a cracked shroud and a temperature gauge that climbs in traffic.
age-driven Transfer case (NV249 Selec-Trac): viscous coupler and mode selector $1,900-$2,700 (an owner's repair quotes on a 1995, posted in 2015) A buying guide says the NV249 can have viscous coupler or mode selector trouble and tells buyers to test every 4WD mode. A RepairPal question from an owner of a 1995 reports quotes of $1,900 up to $2,700 for transfer case repair. That is an owner's report from 2015, not a current estimate.
any Fuel tank in a rear impact (recall 13V252000) Free at a Jeep dealer when the recall is open NHTSA's record says Chrysler recalled 1993-1998 Grand Cherokees (and 2002-2007 Liberties) because the fuel tank is at risk of failure and leakage in certain rear impacts. Confirm the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
age-driven Body and underbody rust in northern climates Not verified - no source priced a repair The ZJ wiki names rocker panels, floorboards, rear quarter panels and subframe areas. Get the Jeep on a lift and tap the frame and mounts before you talk price.

ZJ Grand Cherokees in our catalog clear around $1,395-3,200 depending on year (86 cleared sales, 1993-1998 model years). The lowest yearly median is 1997 and the highest is 1993, but 1993 rests on 3 cleared sales and 1997 on 7, so read those ends loosely. We track 97 listings across 1993 to 1998.

1999–2004

Gen 2 (WJ)

Elk Grove CDJR dates the WJ 1999-2004 and Vehicle Bright gives the same split. (EncyCARpedia counts by production date and runs it from 1999 to 2005.) Our model years for this generation are 1999 to 2004. The 4.7L V8 and the Quadra-Drive four-wheel-drive system appear in owner threads about this generation.

NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 13.35 for 2004 (1,295 complaints across 97 listings) to 60.73 for 1999 (2,004 across 33), against a generation median of 27.85. Older years have had more time to collect complaints, which is why the rates fall each year. 1999 is 2.2 times the median, and 8 of its 18 enriched ads (44.4%) mention a problem against a 27.2% median, and with the 'rust' flaw excluded it is 5 of 18 (27.8%) against 10.2%. With 33 listings it clears our minimum of 30, so our rule flags 1999 (details under 'Years flagged'). Owners most often name the hydraulic brakes, the power train, air bags and visibility.

age-driven; reports at 140,000+ miles 4.7L V8 overheating in traffic, even after a new radiator Not verified - no source priced it Three owner threads describe a WJ 4.7 that climbs past 210-230F in traffic or on hills: a 2000 Quadra-Drive bought at 142,000 miles, a 2004 Limited, and a 2003 whose radiator was replaced but still overheated until an electric fan and a transmission cooler were added. These are owner reports, not a diagnosis. A go-parts guide for the 4.0L notes a 2003-2004 radiator build-date change, so match parts by build date.
any Fuel tank vent tube welds (recall 00V195000, MY2000) Free at a Jeep dealer when the recall is open NHTSA's record says some sport utility vehicles may have been built with fuel tanks with suspect vent tube welds. We have it recorded under model year 2000. Confirm the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
age-driven Transfer case shift motor (four-wheel-drive shifting) $548-$1,198 (RepairPal, Grand Cherokee transfer case shift motor, all model years) RepairPal's page prices the shift motor replacement for the Grand Cherokee as a whole, not the WJ specifically. YourMechanic lists a transfer case output shaft seal from $154. Test every 4WD mode on the drive.

Years flagged

A year is flagged by our rule only when all three hold: (1) its NHTSA complaints per catalog listing is at least 2.0x the median for its generation, (2) the share of ads that mention a problem is above the generation median, and (3) we track at least 30 listings for that year. The cutoff was fixed before we looked. Ad mentions are not failures, and a flag is a reason to inspect harder, not a verdict on any one car.

  • 1999 — flagged by our rule: NHTSA complaints are more than twice the generation norm, and ads mention a problem more often than the generation median, including with the 'rust' flaw left out of the ad count. NHTSA owners most often name the hydraulic brakes, the power train and visibility for this year. Check those systems on a test drive and confirm recall work. complaints 60.73 complaints per listing (2,004 NHTSA complaints / 33 listings) vs generation norm 27.85 (Gen 2 median) · ad mentions 8 of 18 enriched ads = 44.4% (Gen 2 median 27.2%); with the 'rust' flaw excluded, 5 of 18 = 27.8% (median 10.2%) · n=33

Complaints add up over a car's whole life, so older years in a generation can look worse here than they are. Read this flag next to the complaint details below.

WJ Grand Cherokees in our catalog clear around $2,500-4,090 depending on year (262 cleared sales, 1999-2004 model years). The lowest yearly median is 1999 and the highest is 2001. We track 312 listings across 1999 to 2004.

2005–2010

Gen 3 (WK)

Vehicle Bright and CarBuzz both give the WK 2005-2010, and CarReliabilityReport treats the 2008-2010 facelift as the better V8 buy. (EncyCARpedia counts by production date and runs it to 2011.) Our model years for this generation are 2005 to 2010. The 2009 and 2010 complaint counts are low (138 and 118) next to 2008 (734) and the 2011 WK2 (1,640). We queried NHTSA under the other Grand Cherokee names and found no hidden complaints, so we treat the low counts as real. By our rule neither year is a data hole (a hole is a year below one fifth of both neighbours), and a search snippet from The Weekly Driver reports 5,418 NHTSA complaints for 2005-2010 against our 5,448.

NHTSA complaints per catalog listing fall every year, from 22.07 for 2005 (2,052 complaints across 93 listings) to 2.23 for 2010 (118 across 53), against a generation median of 10.25. 2005 is 2.2 times that median, and 17 of 63 enriched ads (27.0%) mention a problem against a 23.6% median, and with the 'rust' flaw excluded it is 9 of 63 (14.3%) against 11.3%. With 93 listings it clears our minimum, so our rule flags 2005. Owners most often name the electrical system, then structure and the power train.

any Transfer case electrical failure can shift into neutral (recall 13V175000) Free at a Jeep dealer when the recall is open NHTSA's record says a transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shift of the transfer case into neutral, on 2005-2010 Grand Cherokees built from February 2004 to March 2010 (and Commanders). Confirm the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Separately, RepairPal prices a Grand Cherokee transfer case shift motor at $548-$1,198 across model years.
any Ignition switch and the air bag system (recall 14V438000) Free at a Jeep dealer when the recall is open NHTSA's record says the defect can affect the safe operation of the air bag system, and until the recall is done drivers should leave clearance between the knee and the ignition key and carry only the key on the ring. It covers 2005-2007 Grand Cherokees built from February 2004 to July 2007. CarReliabilityReport tells WK buyers to make sure recalls, 'especially the N23 and the ignition switch', were handled.
not stated Rear axle and differential failures on a 2005 5.7L (one owner's report) Not verified - no source priced it One BobIsTheOilGuy poster says their 2005 Limited 5.7L had rear differentials or housings replaced three or four times before the Jeep was bought back. That is one family's experience, not a pattern we can confirm. Listen for whine and clunk from the rear on the test drive.

2011–2021

Gen 4 (WK2)

Vehicle Bright and CarBuzz give the WK2 as 2011 to 2021. Model year 2021 overlaps the next generation: Car and Driver reports the outgoing Grand Cherokee continued for 2021 while the new three-row Grand Cherokee L (the WL) launched, with MoparInsiders putting L production at March 2021 and a two-row WL at August 2021. Our generations put every 2021 in the WK2, so the 2021 figures (506 NHTSA complaints across 208 listings, 2.43 per listing) cover both the old body and the early L. That figure sits at the generation median, so 2021 is not flagged. Check the VIN and the body before you read a WK2 or WL guide for a 2021.

NHTSA complaints per catalog listing fall from 9.59 for 2011 (1,640 complaints across 171 listings) to 1.13 for 2017 (364 across 321), against a generation median of 2.43. 2011 is 3.9 times that median, 2012 is 3.4 times (8.22: 1,644 across 200) and 2014 is 2.3 times (5.48: 2,384 across 435). All three also clear the ad-mention test with the 'rust' flaw excluded, so our rule flags them, but the ad margins are thin (see 'Years flagged'). 2013 has 5.00 per listing (805 across 161) but its ad rate equals the median, so it is not flagged. Stivers CDJR's blog names 2011-2014 as the years to be careful with, which agrees with our flags. Owners most often name the electrical system, brakes, seats and the power train.

age-driven Air suspension (Quadra-Lift) air springs and compressor on Overland and Summit trims $1,865-$1,945 per RepairPal air spring estimate; $2,000-$4,000 in an owner thread; $8,000 for a full system quote on a 2011 RepairPal prices an air spring replacement at $1,865-$1,945. A Jeep Garage thread says $2-4k depending on what needs replacing, and one 2011 Overland owner was quoted $8,000 by a dealer to fix all of it. YourMechanic lists an air bag replacement from $327, which is a part-and-labour floor for one bag. Ask whether the Jeep has air suspension, and check that it rides level after sitting overnight.
reports start around 50,000-60,000+ miles 3.6L Pentastar oil filter housing and cooler leak $900 (one owner, aftermarket aluminum part) to $1,100-$1,900 (shop quotes) The plastic housing on top of the engine cracks and leaks oil and coolant into the valley. Go-Parts says shop quotes run $1,100-$1,900 because the intake manifold has to come off. A 2017 owner paid almost $900 for an aluminum part at an independent shop. Look for oil or coolant smell and residue in the engine valley.
one owner reports 93,000 miles; not otherwise stated 5.7L Hemi camshaft and lifter wear (MDS cylinder deactivation) $3,500 (CarCareCamp) to $6,000 (owner quotes on a 2013 Grand Cherokee) Owners report camshaft and lifter failures on the 5.7L. CarCareCamp says a 5.7 Hemi lifter job can reach $3,500; two owner threads report $6,000 quotes on Grand Cherokees. RepairPal's lower figure of $1,172-$1,545 is for a camshaft alone. Ask for oil change records and have a shop listen to the engine.
any Brake-transmission shift interlock solenoid (recall 16V249000, MY2016) Free at a Jeep dealer when the recall is open NHTSA's record says the interlock solenoid may have a loose electrical connection and lose function, on 2016 Grand Cherokees built May 2015 to February 2016. 2022–2026

Gen 5 (WL)

The WL launched as the three-row Grand Cherokee L for 2021, with the two-row WL following for 2022 (Car and Driver, MoparInsiders, MotorTrend). Wikipedia notes that for model year 2022 Jeep also sold the outgoing WK2 as the 'Grand Cherokee WK' alongside the WL. Our generations start the WL at 2022, so the 96 NHTSA complaints filed under 'Grand Cherokee L' for 2021 sit in the WK2 section, and our 2022 figures (453 complaints across 99 listings) may include some leftover WK2 cars. We queried NHTSA under 'Grand Cherokee', 'L', '4xe' and 'WK' and joined the results by complaint number.

NHTSA complaints per catalog listing are 4.58 for 2022 (453 complaints across 99 listings) and 3.36 for 2023 (504 across 150), which is the generation median. 2026 shows 8.00 only because it rests on 7 listings. 2022 is 1.4 times the median, so no year is flagged. Enriched-ad counts exist for only one year (2024: 6 of 76 ads, 7.9%), so the ad-mention test cannot run on the others. Owners most often name the electrical system and the engine. Several recalls cover the 4xe: NHTSA records 24V720000 and 25V741000 for a high-voltage battery that may fail internally and lead to a fire, and 25V766000 for debris inside the engine of 2023-2025 4xe models.

Questions people actually ask

What Jeep Grand Cherokee years should you avoid?

We don't tell you to skip a year; we flag by a fixed rule (see 'Years flagged'), and five years trip it: 1999, 2005, 2011, 2012 and 2014. For 2011, NHTSA complaints are 9.59 per catalog listing (1,640 across 171) against a WK2 median of 2.43; 2012 is 8.22 and 2014 is 5.48. The ad-mention margins on the WK2 years are small. Stivers CDJR's dealer blog also names 2011-2014 as the years to be careful with. 2013 had a high complaint rate (5.00) but its ad rate equals the median, so it is not flagged.

How much does Grand Cherokee air suspension repair cost?

RepairPal prices an air spring replacement at $1,865-$1,945. A Jeep Garage thread says $2,000-$4,000 depending on what needs replacing, and one 2011 Overland owner was quoted $8,000 by a dealer to fix the whole system. YourMechanic lists an air bag replacement from $327. Only Overland, Summit and some other trims have it, so check the build before you worry.

How much does a 3.6L Pentastar oil filter housing leak cost to fix?

Go-Parts says shop quotes run $1,100-$1,900 because the intake manifold has to come off. A 2017 owner reported almost $900 for an aluminum aftermarket part at an independent shop. Autos of Chicago says the plastic housing cracks past 60,000 miles on the 2014-2021 3.6L, though that is one shop's view.

Does the 5.7L Hemi in the Grand Cherokee have camshaft and lifter problems?

Owners report it. CarCareCamp says a 5.7 Hemi lifter replacement can cost up to $3,500, and two owner threads report $6,000 quotes on Grand Cherokees. RepairPal prices a camshaft replacement alone at $1,172-$1,545. We could not find a source that counts how many Hemi Grand Cherokees are affected, so we do not claim a rate.

What are the Grand Cherokee generations?

ZJ 1993-1998, WJ 1999-2004, WK 2005-2010, WK2 2011-2021 and WL 2022 to the present (Vehicle Bright, Elk Grove CDJR, CarBuzz). Production-date sources such as EncyCARpedia run each a year later. Model year 2021 had both: the outgoing WK2 and the new three-row Grand Cherokee L, and Wikipedia says Jeep still sold the WK2 alongside the WL for 2022.

Is a 2021 Grand Cherokee a WK2 or a WL?

Both. Car and Driver reports the outgoing Grand Cherokee continued for 2021 while the new three-row Grand Cherokee L launched, and MoparInsiders dates L production to March 2021 and a two-row WL to August 2021. Our generations put every 2021 in the WK2, so the 2021 figures (506 NHTSA complaints across 208 listings, 2.43 per listing) cover both. Check the VIN and the body style before you read a WK2 or WL guide for a specific 2021.
