Every generation: what ownership is like, what breaks at what mileage, what repairs cost, and what to check before you buy.
Search 'Nissan Rogue years to avoid' and the top lists lean on one story. CarBuzz says a case can be made against every year because of the CVT. CarWorthIt names 2013. The Vantage Group says the CVT reputation applies to 2014-2020. None of them shows a count behind the years.
This page walks three Rogue generations back to 2008. For each, it shows what breaks, what repairs cost where we found sources, and what to check in person. We add our own numbers, NHTSA complaints per catalog listing and how often ads mention a problem, always with the denominator. Ad mentions are not confirmed failures.
Our fixed rule flags one Rogue year. 2008: 429 complaints across 56 listings, 7.66 complaints per listing against a 2008-2013 median of 2.73. Only 56 of our listings are 2008s, so that rate rests on a small base. 2013, the year CarWorthIt singles out, runs 2.23 per listing, under our cutoff. 2014 runs 2.21 against a 2014-2020 median of 1.46. 2023 has the most NHTSA complaints of any year (758) and two engine recalls on file, but our ad data has nothing for 2023, so the rule cannot flag it.
problems cluster by generation, not by badge — know which one you're looking at
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 1.93 for 2012 (319 complaints across 165 listings) to 7.66 for 2008 (429 across 56), against a generation median of 2.73. The highest year, 2008, is 2.8 times that median. Flagged by our rule: 2008. For 2008, NHTSA's three most frequent components are Power Train (106), Air Bags (81), Fuel/Propulsion System (19). We have not read the 2008 complaints one by one, so we do not say what failed.

|---|---|---|---|
| No consistent mileage found | CVT problems (judder, replacement) | $4,500-$5,300 (a Kelley Blue Book range cited by one aggregator, which also cites a $3,190 owner-reported average); $3,500-$5,000 and $4,000-$5,000 (remanufactured unit) in two others; franchise dealers $5,800-$7,400+ in a fourth. Single owner post: $4,000 for a 2025 replacement | These are blog and aggregator price ranges (most read as search snippets), not shop price lists, and they cover Rogues of all years. We found no consistent mileage at which the CVT fails: one site anecdote says some units fail before 70,000 miles while others last far longer. Repair of parts inside the unit (solenoids, stepper motor, valve body) is listed at $400-$2,800 on one site. |
| Coverage to 10 years/120,000 miles, from 5 years/60,000 | Nissan CVT warranty extension letter (2008-2010) | Covered repairs free while inside the extended limits | The 2009 Nissan owner letter, reproduced on an Edmunds forum and a law-firm page, extends CVT repair, replacement and towing coverage to 10 years/120,000 miles. One repair site says it covered every 2003-2010 Nissan with a CVT, including the 2008-2010 Rogue. One site claims 7 years/84,000 miles for some 2008-2013 cars; that conflicts, so we make no claim about 2011-2013. Ask the dealer to confirm any VIN's coverage; a 2008 car is now past 10 years. |
| Owner reports on 2012-2013 cars; no mileage given | Exhaust and catalytic converter leaks, body rust | Catalytic converter replacement $1,374-$1,544 (RepairPal, all Rogue years) | Consumer Reports owner comments on the 2012 and 2013 Rogue mention exhaust and manifold leaks and body rust. These are individual owner comments, not counts. |
| any | Recalls on file (7 campaigns in our records): 08V521000 (2008), 09V393000 (2008), 09V411000 (2008-2009), 10V401000 (2008-2010), 11V565000 (2011), 12V068000 (2012), 15V032000 (2008-2013) | Free at a Nissan dealer when open | Includes 15V032000, an electrical short in a harness connector from water and salt under the driver-side carpet (2008-2013 Rogue and 2014 Rogue Select), and 09V411000, a steering gear housing screw (2008-2009). Confirm by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. |
A year is flagged by our rule only when all three hold: (1) its NHTSA complaints per catalog listing is at least 2.0x the median for its generation, (2) the share of ads that mention a problem is above the generation median, and (3) we track at least 30 listings for that year. The cutoff was fixed before we looked. Ad mentions are not failures, and a flag is a reason to inspect harder, not a verdict on any one car. We also re-ran the ad test with the 'rust' flaw left out, because the ad reader counts phrases like 'no rust' as mentions, and publish a flag only if it passes both ways.
Complaints add up over a car's whole life, so older years in a generation can look worse here than they are. Read this flag next to the complaint details below.
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 0.67 for 2020 (153 complaints across 227 listings) to 2.21 for 2014 (440 across 199), against a generation median of 1.46. The highest year, 2014, is 1.5 times that median. No year reaches the 2.0x our rule needs together with an above-median ad share and 30 or more listings, so nothing is flagged. Ads: 2017 stands out, with 43 mentions across 284 enriched ads (15.1%), but 2017 does not clear the complaint cutoff, so it is not flagged.

| No consistent mileage found | CVT problems (judder, replacement) | $4,500-$5,300 (a Kelley Blue Book range cited by one aggregator, which also cites a $3,190 owner-reported average); about $4,000 out of warranty in a 2021 law-firm post; $3,500-$5,000 and $4,000-$5,000 (remanufactured) in two others; franchise dealers $5,800-$7,400+ in a fourth | Price ranges are blog and aggregator figures, mostly read as search snippets, and cover Rogues of all years. We found no consistent failure mileage; one site says some units fail before 70,000 miles and others last much longer. Internal repairs (solenoids, stepper motor, valve body) are listed at $400-$2,800 on one site. Third-party lists disagree on the best year: CarWorthIt names 2020 as best and 2013 to avoid, and the Vantage Group says the CVT reputation applies to 2014-2020. |
| Extended from 60 months/60,000 miles to 84 months/84,000 miles | CVT warranty extension and class settlement (2014-2018 Rogue, 2015 Rogue Select) | Covered repairs free inside the extended limits; reimbursement for earlier covered repairs under the settlement | Two Nissan campaign bulletins hosted by NHTSA (June and August 2022) describe a CVT warranty extension from 60 months/60,000 miles to 84 months/84,000 miles. We could not open the PDFs, so the covered-model list comes from three repair sites, all saying 2014-2018 Rogue and 2015 Rogue Select, tied to a settlement a court approved on March 23, 2022. The NHTSA-hosted settlement notice also describes a new-vehicle voucher for owners with two or more transmission repairs. Most 2014 cars are past 84 months, so check the VIN with a Nissan dealer. |
| any | Automatic emergency braking activating without cause (2017-2018) | Not stated in the sources | In 2019 NHTSA opened a probe covering about 554,000 2017-2018 Rogues after reports of unintended braking: 87 complaints at the time of one report, 14 crashes and five injuries in another. Nissan recalled 75,358 2017-2018 Rogue and Qashqai in Canada for the same behavior. We did not find the probe's final outcome, so no US repair is claimed here. |
| any | Recalls on file (19 campaigns in our records): 14V218000 (2014), 14V229000 (2014), 15V012000 (2014-2015), 15V032000 (2014), 15V197000 (2014), 15V368000 (2015), 15V453000 (2015), 15V775000 (2015), 16V149000 (2014), 16V219000 (2014-2016), 16V244000 (2014-2017), 16V911000 (2015-2016), 17V663000 (2016-2017), 17V716000 (2016), 19V654000 (2018-2019), 21V839000 (2017-2019), 22V024000 (2014-2016), 22V875000 (2017), 23V093000 (2014-2020) | Free at a Nissan dealer when open | Includes 15V032000 (2014 Rogue Select harness short), fuel pump campaigns on 2014 cars, 15V775000 (2015 shift selector), and 23V093000 (jackknife ignition key, 2014-2020). Confirm by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. |
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 1.83 for 2021 (295 complaints across 161 listings) to 4.34 for 2022 (269 across 62), against a generation median of 2.61. The highest year, 2022, is 1.7 times that median. No year reaches the 2.0x our rule needs together with an above-median ad share and 30 or more listings, so nothing is flagged. 2023 has the most complaints of any year in this generation: 758 across 233 listings. We have no ad-mention data for 2023, so the ad half of our rule cannot be tested for it. We have no NHTSA complaint count for 2026.

| any | VC-Turbo engine bearing and oil recalls (2021-2025) | Free at a Nissan dealer when open | NHTSA campaign 25V437000 (June 2025) covers certain 2021-2024 Rogues with the VC-Turbo engines for bearings that may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine failure. Campaign 26V080000 (February 2026) covers certain 2023-2025 Rogues with the 1.5L engine, where hot engine oil can break down and let bearings seize. Campaign 26V081000 covers broken gears in the electronic throttle body on 2024-2025 Rogues with the same engine. News reports put the two February 2026 recalls at 642,698 vehicles. Recall repairs are free; ask a dealer which of these a specific VIN is open for. |
| n/a | CVT on the 2021 Rogue | Not verified | We did not find a sourced warranty extension or settlement covering the 2021-and-later Rogue, so we state none. Third-party lists mostly place the CVT complaints in 2014-2020 (Vantage Group). |

| Rogue Select | 2014-2015 (per Wikipedia and J.D. Power) | The first-generation Rogue kept on sale beside the redesigned one. NHTSA files its complaints under ROGUE, so it is already in our counts. |
| Rogue Hybrid | 2017-2019 (per NHTSA recall records) | A hybrid trim of the second-generation Rogue. Counted with the Rogue. |
| Rogue Sport | 2017 onward | A different, smaller crossover (sold as the Qashqai elsewhere). Not counted on this page. |

We don't tell you to skip a year; we flag by a fixed rule, and it flags 2008 (429 complaints across 56 listings, 7.66 per listing against a 2008-2013 median of 2.73, on only 56 listings). Third-party lists name other years: CarWorthIt names 2013, CarBuzz says a case can be made against every year, and the Vantage Group places the CVT reputation in 2014-2020. In our data 2013 has 2.23 per listing and 2014 has 2.21, both under our cutoff.
Published figures include $4,500-$5,300 (a Kelley Blue Book range cited by one aggregator, alongside a $3,190 owner-reported average) and $3,500-$5,000 to $4,000-$5,000 for a remanufactured unit, with franchise dealers quoted at $5,800-$7,400+ by one shop blog. One Reddit owner reports a $4,000 mechanic quote in 2025. These are blog and owner figures, not a price list, and they cover Rogues of all years.
Yes for some years. A 2009 Nissan letter, copied on an Edmunds forum and a law-firm page, extends CVT coverage from 5 years/60,000 miles to 10 years/120,000 miles, and one repair site says it covered the 2008-2010 Rogue. NHTSA-hosted Nissan bulletins from 2022 describe an extension from 60 months/60,000 miles to 84 months/84,000 miles; three repair sites list the 2014-2018 Rogue and 2015 Rogue Select as covered. We could not open the bulletin PDFs, so confirm any VIN with a Nissan dealer.
A settlement notice hosted by NHTSA is dated March 23, 2022. It describes reimbursement for CVT repairs made inside the extended warranty limits and a new-vehicle voucher for 2014-18 Rogue owners with two or more transmission repairs. Deadlines applied, so check the current status with Nissan.
No. NHTSA lists the Rogue Sport (2017 onward) as a separate vehicle, and we leave it out of every Rogue count on this page.
NHTSA campaign 25V437000 (June 2025) covers certain 2021-2024 Rogues for engine bearings that may have manufacturing defects. Campaign 26V080000 (February 2026) covers certain 2023-2025 Rogues where hot oil can break down and let bearings seize, and 26V081000 covers broken throttle body gears on 2024-2025 cars. Motor1 reports the two February 2026 recalls cover 642,698 vehicles. Repairs are free; check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
We don't rank generations. Our own numbers: the 2014-2020 generation has a median of 1.46 NHTSA complaints per catalog listing, the 2021-present generation has 2.61, and 2008-2013 has 2.73. Those rates are not directly comparable across generations, because newer cars have had less time and different ways of being reported.
