Every generation: what ownership is like, what breaks at what mileage, what repairs cost, and what to check before you buy.
Search 'Ford Mustang years to avoid' and the lists agree on a few years. CoPilot names 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2016. MotorBiscuit names 2006, 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2016. Jalopnik points at 2006. None of them shows a count behind the years.
This page walks five Mustang generations, from the Fox body in 1985 through today's S650. For each, it shows what breaks, what repairs cost where we found sources, and what to check in person. We add our own numbers, NHTSA complaints per catalog listing and how often ads mention a problem, always with the denominator. Ad mentions are not confirmed failures.
Our fixed rule flags no Mustang year. The nearest is 1995: 701 complaints across 47 listings, 14.91 complaints per listing against a 1994-2004 median of 7.12, but only 4 of 39 enriched 1995 ads mention a problem once the 'rust' flaw is excluded, below the median, so it fails the second test. 2006 runs 4.87 per listing and 2015 runs 3.33; 2016 runs 2.88. Each is under 2.0x its generation median (4.98 for 2005-2014, 1.84 for 2015-2023).
problems cluster by generation, not by badge — know which one you're looking at
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 1.23 for 1985 (16 complaints across 13 listings) to 8.20 for 1991 (82 across 10), against a generation median of 4.75. The highest year, 1991, is 1.7 times that median. No year reaches the 2.0x our rule needs together with an above-median ad share and 30 or more listings, so nothing is flagged. Read those rates loosely: with 8 to 31 listings a year, one extra complaint moves a rate a lot. Most complaints are logged against the electrical system.

| No mileage found | Rear main seal leak on the 5.0 | Not verified | One retailer guide calls a rear main seal leak 'very common' on the 5.0 and says the fix is not hard but time-consuming and expensive if paid for. We found no cost figure. |
| No mileage found | Heater core leaks | Not verified | A 2015 forum post says the Fox-body heater cores crack and leak into the cabin. One forum post is all we have. |
| any | Recalls on file (0 campaigns in our records): | Free at a Ford dealer when open | Our recall table holds no campaigns for these years (it starts at 1995), which says nothing about whether a car had recall work. Confirm by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. |
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 1.35 for 2004 (130 complaints across 96 listings) to 14.91 for 1995 (701 across 47), against a generation median of 7.12. The highest year, 1995, is 2.1 times that median. No year reaches the 2.0x our rule needs together with an above-median ad share and 30 or more listings, so nothing is flagged. Listings run 32 to 99 a year here; the oldest years rest on the fewest cars.

| No consistent mileage found; sources describe it as developing over time | Cracked plastic intake manifold or coolant crossover (4.6L, 1996-2001) | About $400-$445 for a repair in owner posts from 1996 and 2002 (parts and labor, old prices); a replacement manifold part was listed at $185 in a 2007 post | Go-Parts says the 1996-2001 manifold was all plastic including the front coolant crossover and cracks from heat and stress; a Corral.net poster says 1999-2001 crossovers deform and leak at the thermostat housing. Cost figures are decades-old owner posts from search snippets, so today's prices will differ. One poster cites a 2000 recall or TSB numbered 00S43; another says Ford's recall covered only police cars. We could not verify either, so we do not claim a recall. |
| any | Recalls on file (23 campaigns in our records): 00V349000 (1995-2001), 01I011000 (1995), 01V318000 (1995-1997), 01V390000 (1995), 06E023000 (1995-1998), 06E025000 (1995-1998), 06E026000 (1995-1998), 06E038000 (1999-2001), 06E049000 (1995-2004), 06E056000 (1998-2004), 06E060000 (1995-1998), 06E064000 (1995-2002), 06V108000 (2003-2004), 08E050000 (1995-2004), 09E012000 (1995-2004), 09E025000 (1995-2004), 95E006002 (1995), 95V134000 (1995), 97V165000 (1998), 97V180000 (1995-1996), 97V216000 (1998), 99V062001 (1998-1999), 99V250000 (1999-2000) | Free at a Ford dealer when open | Mixed: many are aftermarket lamp recalls, plus Ford campaigns for the parking brake, cooling fan, air bag inflator and a 4.6L fuel rail braze joint. Confirm by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. |
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 2.38 for 2014 (359 complaints across 151 listings) to 8.86 for 2005 (868 across 98), against a generation median of 4.98. The highest year, 2005, is 1.8 times that median. No year reaches the 2.0x our rule needs together with an above-median ad share and 30 or more listings, so nothing is flagged. Air bag is the top complaint category in nearly every year here, and a large air bag inflator campaign covers 2005-2014 Mustangs (recall 15V319, below).

| Happens at removal, so it depends on how long plugs stay in; no mileage found | Broken spark plugs on the 4.6L 3V (2005-2008 GT) | $400-$1,500 per cylinder to extract; $2,500-$4,000 if a head comes off (CarScout). One owner: $95 plus a $100 tow | Ford's two-piece plug in the 4.6L 3V can snap in the head when removed. CarScout puts broken-plug extraction at $400-$1,500 per cylinder and $2,500-$4,000 if a head has to come off; one 2006 owner on CarComplaints paid $95 to extract one plug plus a $100 tow, so costs vary widely. These are retailer-blog and owner figures from pages we read in part or as search snippets, not shop price lists. MustangForums and aa1car cite Ford TSB 08-7-6 (April 2008) for the removal procedure. CarScout says redesigned heads arrived in December 2007, so most late-2008 and all 2009-2010 GTs are lower risk; we could not confirm that date from a Ford document. |
| 80,000-120,000 miles (CarScout) | Timing chain cassette rattle on the 4.6L 3V | $1,200-$2,000 parts and labor (CarScout) | A cold-start metallic rattle that fades in 30-60 seconds is described as common; if it does not fade, the guides or cassette are worn. Single source, so treat the mileage and cost loosely. |
| No mileage found | 5.0 Coyote timing and misfire checks (2011-2014) | Not verified | Drivurs says early Gen 1 Coyotes show timing chain tensioner wear; CarCody says early Gen 1 cars need a careful timing and misfire inspection. Both are search snippets and neither gives a cost. |
| any | Recalls on file (13 campaigns in our records): 06E089000 (2005-2007), 08V082000 (2005-2008), 09E012000 (2005-2008), 09E025000 (2005-2008), 12V190000 (2012-2013), 15V319000 (2005-2014), 16V248000 (2012), 16V384000 (2005-2011), 17V024000 (2005-2012), 18V046000 (2009-2013), 19V001000 (2010-2014), 21E013000 (2005-2014), 21V081000 (2005-2014) | Free at a Ford dealer when open | Includes a very large Takata-type air bag inflator campaign for 2005-2014 Mustangs (15V319) and later related campaigns. CarScout says every 2005-2014 Mustang is subject to it. Confirm by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. |
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 0.82 for 2021 (55 complaints across 67 listings) to 3.33 for 2015 (439 across 132), against a generation median of 1.84. The highest year, 2015, is 1.8 times that median. No year reaches the 2.0x our rule needs together with an above-median ad share and 30 or more listings, so nothing is flagged. Our catalog files Mustang Mach-E listings under the Mustang name from 2021; we removed them from the per-listing denominators here, and NHTSA keeps Mach-E complaints under a separate model name, so they are not in the complaint counts. 2023 has no NHTSA complaint count in our data, so it has no rate and cannot be flagged.

| No mileage found | MT82 manual: sloppy shifter, clutch line | Not verified | A Mustang6G owner post says the only real issue on a 2015-2017 MT82 is a sloppy shifter. CJ Pony Parts, which sells upgrades, says the stock clutch fluid line is flimsy and can contribute to a sticking pedal. Both are search snippets. |
| No mileage found | 10-speed automatic and 2.3L EcoBoost | Not verified | APEX Tech Nation (a repair site) says the problems on 2016-2024 Mustangs concentrate in the 10-speed automatic and the 2.3L EcoBoost. NHTSA recall 18V213 covers 2018 cars with the 10-speed, and 15V339 covers 2015 cars with the 2.3L fuel tank. We found no cost. |

Confirm by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. |
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 0.57 for 2026 (8 complaints across 14 listings) to 2.05 for 2024 (84 across 41), against a generation median of 0.95. The highest year, 2024, is 2.2 times that median. No year reaches the 2.0x our rule needs together with an above-median ad share and 30 or more listings, so nothing is flagged. We track only 15 to 42 Mustangs a year here (Mach-E removed), so rates are noisy.

We don't tell you to skip a year; our fixed rule flags none. Third-party lists name 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2016. In our data 2006 has 4.87 complaints per listing (575 complaints across 118 listings), 2015 has 3.33 (439 complaints across 132 listings) and 2016 has 2.88, each under the 2.0x cutoff against its generation median. 2011 and 2012 have no ad-mention data, so our ad test cannot run on them.
On the 2005-2008 4.6L 3V V8, the two-piece spark plug can snap in the cylinder head when removed. CarScout puts extraction at $400-$1,500 per cylinder, and $2,500-$4,000 if a head has to come off; one 2006 owner paid $95 plus a $100 tow for a single plug. MustangForums and aa1car cite Ford TSB 08-7-6 (April 2008) for the removal procedure. These costs are retailer-blog and owner figures, not shop price lists.
The 1996-2001 4.6L V8 used an all-plastic intake manifold with a plastic coolant crossover that cracks, according to Go-Parts, and a Corral.net poster says 1999-2001 crossovers leak at the thermostat housing. Owner posts from 1996 and 2002 put the repair at about $400-$445, which are old prices. We could not verify a Ford recall.
We don't rank engines. APEX Tech Nation says the problems on 2016-2024 Mustangs concentrate in the 10-speed automatic and the 2.3L EcoBoost, which is one repair site's view. Our data counts complaints per year, not per engine, so it cannot compare them.
Yes, several times. Road & Track reports a recall of almost 150,000 2024-2026 Mustangs for an engine-bay ground connection that may fracture and cut engine power, and autoevolution reports a separate 105,000-vehicle lighting recall for 2024-2025 cars. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
We don't rank generations. Our own numbers: the median is 4.98 NHTSA complaints per catalog listing for the 2005-2014 generation, 1.84 for 2015-2023 and 0.95 for 2024 onward. Those rates are not directly comparable across generations, because newer cars have had less time to collect complaints.
