Ford Mustang S197 (2005-2014) (2005–2014)

2005–2014

S197 (2005-2014)

The S197 ran 2005 to 2014, with facelifts in 2010 and 2013 (CarBuzz). CarScout describes two phases: 2005-2010 with the 4.0L V6 and 4.6L 3V V8, and 2011-2014 with the 3.7L V6 and the 5.0L Coyote V8.

NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 2.38 for 2014 (359 complaints across 151 listings) to 8.86 for 2005 (868 across 98), against a generation median of 4.98. The highest year, 2005, is 1.8 times that median. No year reaches the 2.0x our rule needs together with an above-median ad share and 30 or more listings, so nothing is flagged. Air bag is the top complaint category in nearly every year here, and a large air bag inflator campaign covers 2005-2014 Mustangs (recall 15V319, below).

What happens at what mileage

MilesItemCostNotes
Happens at removal, so it depends on how long plugs stay in; no mileage found Broken spark plugs on the 4.6L 3V (2005-2008 GT) $400-$1,500 per cylinder to extract; $2,500-$4,000 if a head comes off (CarScout). One owner: $95 plus a $100 tow Ford's two-piece plug in the 4.6L 3V can snap in the head when removed. CarScout puts broken-plug extraction at $400-$1,500 per cylinder and $2,500-$4,000 if a head has to come off; one 2006 owner on CarComplaints paid $95 to extract one plug plus a $100 tow, so costs vary widely. These are retailer-blog and owner figures from pages we read in part or as search snippets, not shop price lists. MustangForums and aa1car cite Ford TSB 08-7-6 (April 2008) for the removal procedure. CarScout says redesigned heads arrived in December 2007, so most late-2008 and all 2009-2010 GTs are lower risk; we could not confirm that date from a Ford document.
80,000-120,000 miles (CarScout) Timing chain cassette rattle on the 4.6L 3V $1,200-$2,000 parts and labor (CarScout) A cold-start metallic rattle that fades in 30-60 seconds is described as common; if it does not fade, the guides or cassette are worn. Single source, so treat the mileage and cost loosely.
No mileage found 5.0 Coyote timing and misfire checks (2011-2014) Not verified Drivurs says early Gen 1 Coyotes show timing chain tensioner wear; CarCody says early Gen 1 cars need a careful timing and misfire inspection. Both are search snippets and neither gives a cost.

Years flagged

No year in this generation was flagged. A year is flagged by our rule only when all three hold: (1) its NHTSA complaints per catalog listing is at least 2.0x the median for its generation, (2) the share of ads that mention a problem is above the generation median, and (3) we track at least 30 listings for that year. The cutoff was fixed before we looked. Ad mentions are not failures, and a flag is a reason to inspect harder, not a verdict on any one car. We also re-ran the ad test with the 'rust' flaw left out, because the ad reader counts phrases like 'no rust' as mentions, and publish a flag only if it passes both ways.

2005 to 2014 Mustangs in our catalog clear between $6,700 and $13,000 depending on year (727 cleared sales in total). The lowest yearly median is 2006 at $6,700 (93 sales) and the highest is 2013 at $13,000 (67 sales). Years with fewer than 50 cleared sales: 2009. Read those loosely.

Questions people actually ask

What Ford Mustang years should you avoid?

We don't tell you to skip a year; our fixed rule flags none. Third-party lists name 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2016. In our data 2006 has 4.87 complaints per listing (575 complaints across 118 listings), 2015 has 3.33 (439 complaints across 132 listings) and 2016 has 2.88, each under the 2.0x cutoff against its generation median. 2011 and 2012 have no ad-mention data, so our ad test cannot run on them.

What is the Mustang GT spark plug problem?

On the 2005-2008 4.6L 3V V8, the two-piece spark plug can snap in the cylinder head when removed. CarScout puts extraction at $400-$1,500 per cylinder, and $2,500-$4,000 if a head has to come off; one 2006 owner paid $95 plus a $100 tow for a single plug. MustangForums and aa1car cite Ford TSB 08-7-6 (April 2008) for the removal procedure. These costs are retailer-blog and owner figures, not shop price lists.

Do Mustangs have intake manifold problems?

The 1996-2001 4.6L V8 used an all-plastic intake manifold with a plastic coolant crossover that cracks, according to Go-Parts, and a Corral.net poster says 1999-2001 crossovers leak at the thermostat housing. Owner posts from 1996 and 2002 put the repair at about $400-$445, which are old prices. We could not verify a Ford recall.

Is the Mustang EcoBoost or GT more reliable?

We don't rank engines. APEX Tech Nation says the problems on 2016-2024 Mustangs concentrate in the 10-speed automatic and the 2.3L EcoBoost, which is one repair site's view. Our data counts complaints per year, not per engine, so it cannot compare them.

Has the new S650 Mustang been recalled?

Yes, several times. Road & Track reports a recall of almost 150,000 2024-2026 Mustangs for an engine-bay ground connection that may fracture and cut engine power, and autoevolution reports a separate 105,000-vehicle lighting recall for 2024-2025 cars. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

Which Mustang generation has the fewest complaints?

We don't rank generations. Our own numbers: the median is 4.98 NHTSA complaints per catalog listing for the 2005-2014 generation, 1.84 for 2015-2023 and 0.95 for 2024 onward. Those rates are not directly comparable across generations, because newer cars have had less time to collect complaints.
