Every generation: what ownership is like, what breaks at what mileage, what repairs cost, and what to check before you buy.
Search 'Toyota RAV4 years to avoid' and the lists agree on a few spans without agreeing on the numbers. CoPilot names 2019, 2013 and 2006-2008. CoverageX names 2006-2008 and 2013-2014. AGT Auto adds 2001-2003 and 2009-2012. A Reddit owner calls 2013-2014 the least desirable. None of them shows a count behind the years.
This page walks six RAV4 generations back to 1996. For each, it shows what breaks, what repairs cost where we found sources, and what to check in person. We add our own numbers, NHTSA complaints per catalog listing and how often ads mention a problem, always with the denominator. Ad mentions are not confirmed failures.
Our fixed rule flags two RAV4 years. 2006: 704 complaints across 66 listings, 10.67 per listing against a 2006-2012 median of 2.79, on a small base of 66 listings. 2020: 652 complaints across 116 listings, 5.62 per listing against a 2019-2025 median of 1.84. Years that other lists name do not pass our rule: 2013 runs 1.14 per listing and 2014 runs 1.29, against a 2013-2018 median of 1.34, and 2019 has more complaints than 2020 (906) but fewer ads that mention a problem, so it is not flagged. 2007, the year with the most NHTSA complaints on this page (1,003), is 7.72 per listing, under the cutoff.
problems cluster by generation, not by badge — know which one you're looking at
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 1.58 for 2000 (30 complaints across 19 listings) to 11.75 for 1996 (47 across 4), against a generation median of 8.86. The highest year, 1996, is 1.3 times that median. No year reaches the 2.0x our rule needs together with an above-median ad share and 30 or more listings, so nothing is flagged. The 1998 NHTSA record is led by Air Bags (12), Power Train (9), Service Brakes, Hydraulic (8). We have not read those complaints one by one, so we do not say what failed.

Confirm by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. We found no sourced repair cost or mileage window for first-generation problems, so there are no other items here. |
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 3.35 for 2004 (154 complaints across 46 listings) to 25.75 for 2001 (309 across 12), against a generation median of 8.75. The highest year, 2001, is 2.9 times that median. No year reaches the 2.0x our rule needs together with an above-median ad share and 30 or more listings, so nothing is flagged. In the NHTSA record the leading component for 2002 is Power Train (286), Power Train,Electrical System (41), Engine And Engine Cooling (24). | Extension to 10 years/150,000 miles from new, whichever came first | Automatic transmission and ECM warranty extension (2001-2003) | Repair free inside the limits; the New York Times reported owners paying $3,000 or more before the extension | Toyota extended coverage nationwide in July 2010 on the automatic transmission and ECM of about 235,500 2001-2003 RAV4s (New York Times), after pressure from the California Air Resources Board (Center for Auto Safety). A 2011 settlement, approved in 2012, kept the same 10 years/150,000 miles (Terrell Marshall). An owner letter on CarComplaints describes the fault as a harsh shift fixed by replacing the ECM and, if needed, the transaxle. By arithmetic, 10 years from new has run out for every 2001-2003 car (the latest ends in 2013 or 2014), so today this is history to ask about, not coverage to rely on. We could not read the Toyota bulletin itself. |

Confirm by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. |
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 1.62 for 2011 (287 complaints across 177 listings) to 10.67 for 2006 (704 across 66), against a generation median of 2.79. The highest year, 2006, is 3.8 times that median. Flagged by our rule: 2006. The NHTSA components behind 2006 are Steering (183), Engine (84), Suspension (52), and behind 2007 are Steering (225), Engine (165), Suspension (86). Steering and engine lead both years; we have not read those complaints one by one, so we do not say what failed in steering.

Toyota's ZE7 memo (read on NHTSA's site) covers certain 2006-2008 RAV4s with that engine: primary coverage ran to October 31, 2016 regardless of mileage, then 10 years from first use or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first, after a dealer oil consumption test under T-SB-0158-14. By date, 10 years from first use has run out for all 2006-2008 cars, so for most of them the program is history, not coverage; ask what was done under it. The cost and mileage figures are from one fetched page plus one owner post; the other sources confirm the problem and the years, not the price. |

A year is flagged by our rule only when all three hold: (1) its NHTSA complaints per catalog listing is at least 2.0x the median for its generation, (2) the share of ads that mention a problem is above the generation median, and (3) we track at least 30 listings for that year. The cutoff was fixed before we looked. Ad mentions are not failures, and a flag is a reason to inspect harder, not a verdict on any one car. We also re-ran the ad test with the 'rust' flaw left out, because the ad reader counts phrases like 'no rust' as mentions, and publish a flag only if it passes both ways.
Complaints add up over a car's whole life, so older years in a generation can look worse here than they are. Read this flag next to the complaint details below.
NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 1.14 for 2013 (256 complaints across 224 listings) to 1.52 for 2017 (321 across 211), against a generation median of 1.34. The highest year, 2017, is 1.1 times that median. No year reaches the 2.0x our rule needs together with an above-median ad share and 30 or more listings, so nothing is flagged. The leading NHTSA component in 2013 is Electrical System (43), Unknown Or Other (32); we have not read those complaints one by one.

Toyota's ZH1 program (NHTSA-hosted documents, read in full) covers certain 2013-2015 RAV4s, about 433,200 vehicles: primary coverage to December 31, 2018 in the dealer letters (the revised policy bulletin POL17-06 says April 30, 2018; we do not know which governs), then 8 years from first use or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. By date, 8 years from first use has run out for every 2013-2015 car, so today's repair is the owner's bill unless a dealer agrees otherwise. The repair-shop page that we read cites a different program code (ZE5) and bulletin number than the Toyota documents; we trust the Toyota documents. We found no shop price list from Toyota itself, and the cost figures cover the whole 2013-2018 generation, not only the 2013-2015 cars. |

NHTSA complaints per catalog listing run from 0.54 for 2025 (96 complaints across 178 listings) to 5.70 for 2019 (906 across 159), against a generation median of 1.84. The highest year, 2019, is 3.1 times that median. Flagged by our rule: 2020. The leading NHTSA components are Fuel/Propulsion System (224), Engine (136), Unknown Or Other (95) for 2019 and Engine (121), Fuel/Propulsion System (80), Unknown Or Other (71) for 2020. 2019 has the most complaints of the generation (906) but a lower ad share, which is why only 2020 is flagged. We have not read the complaints one by one.

We don't tell you to skip a year; we flag by a fixed rule, and it flags 2006 (704 complaints across 66 listings, 10.67 per listing against a 2006-2012 median of 2.79, on only 66 listings) and 2020 (652 complaints across 116 listings, 5.62 per listing against a 2019-2025 median of 1.84). Third-party lists name 2006-2008, 2013-2014 and 2019. In our data 2013 has 1.14 per listing and 2014 has 1.29, both under our cutoff.
The 2.4L 2AZ-FE engine in those years has a documented oil consumption problem. Toyota's ZE7 memo, hosted on NHTSA's site, covers certain 2006-2008 RAV4s: primary coverage to October 31, 2016, then 10 years from first use or 150,000 miles, after a dealer oil consumption test. By date, that secondary coverage has run out. One fetched page puts the ring repair at $2,800-$4,500 at an independent shop and an engine replacement at $3,500-$6,000; one owner reports a $5,300 dealer quote.
Owners report a shudder under light throttle with the U760E/F six-speed automatic. Toyota's ZH1 program covers certain 2013-2015 RAV4s, about 433,200 vehicles, with primary coverage to December 31, 2018 (April 30, 2018 in the revised policy bulletin) and then 8 years from first use or 150,000 miles. That secondary window has run out by date. One fetched shop page lists an updated torque converter at $1,750-$2,450 at an independent specialist and $3,200-$4,200 at a Toyota dealer.
Yes. In July 2010 Toyota extended the automatic transmission and ECM warranty on about 235,500 2001-2003 RAV4s to 10 years/150,000 miles from new, the New York Times reported. A 2011 settlement, approved in 2012, kept the same coverage. Ten years from new has run out for every one of those cars.
Yes. The RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime are trims of the same model, and we merge their NHTSA complaints into the RAV4 counts, removing duplicates by complaint number. The RAV4 EV is a different vehicle and is not counted.
We don't rank generations. Our own numbers: the 2013-2018 generation has a median of 1.34 NHTSA complaints per catalog listing, the 2019-2025 generation has 1.84, and 2006-2012 has 2.79. Those rates are not directly comparable across generations, because newer cars have had less time and different ways of being reported.
